Spot On!
by Zorro_by_night on Oct 03, 2005 07:45 PM  Permalink

The article states all the reasons why I fled the confines of Chennai to far safer cities like Bangalore and Mumbai. But Shoba does not set the one great contextualiser for Chennai. Centre of Great Enduring Tradition and gutless bigotry, it is the city where women can NEVER be free. It is the city that condemns women who aspire to any kind of independence - whether in love life or career. If I, a normal male, can feel it so sharply how would a woman in Chennai feel?

[I am reminded of that wonderful song in Fiddler on the Roof called Tradition.]

Careful though, Chennai is more than merely conservative; it is prejudiced and depraved. It is a city without character. Where else can you find people preach old, ante-dated values (and slokas) for a pastime, yet elevate a rapist and a menagerie of ego-ridden actors as their political leaders? To those unused to its claustrophobic air, Chennai is verily the domain of the Big Brother. Thus Chennai, the city I love to hate.

Article by Shobha Warrier
by amit on Oct 03, 2005 07:45 PM  Permalink

Hi,

This is the most ridiculous article i have ever read - i have lived in chennai for 3 years and never seen anything like this or what is described in here.

About kissing in public places - except if you are too much expressive in love and are touching private parts, you are free to do anything - the cops have already had a hard time handling the "30 rs" prostituion. if you donot know what it means then please do visit the beaches in chennai or talk to a constable about this....

Cops in discos and restrain of sex during different week days - nice joke - but surely not a fact. Now i did understand why foreigners ask indians - "do u still travel in elephants?"

This article was in real bad taste - no offence meant to the author who may have been ingnorant of many facts or if i am then please do enlighten me.

Regards

Amit Kumar

Maligning the image of chennai, which is not as told by columnist
by aadhi on Oct 03, 2005 07:45 PM  Permalink

A foreigner kidnapped and raped by a cab driver ( people know where this happened) moral of the story: all the foreigners will be raped in that place.is it? A school student videos his intimate relationship with a girl using his mobile cam and releases it.(people knows where even this happens)moral of the story: school guys have a side business..is it? Small brothers of other cities, get bribes in public places like railway stations, even this was caught in hidden camera and show by one of the popular new channel.. moral of the story: except big brothers all the small brothers get bribe.. is it? I am not trying to malign the image of other cities but this is how the columnist has protrayed chennai. i am a tamilian, but i am not trying to defend chennai. i am an indian. the scene 5 told by the columnist is over exaggeration. the columnist should be more sensible in writing such columns.... Will someone like their daughter kissing some guy in public places like park... if this happens then more MMS will be released.. will those parents like that..... things like this happens everywhere, even worse happens in other places but the columnist has totally maligned the image of chennai.

Chennai is not Chicago
by Thariq & Balram on Oct 03, 2005 07:40 PM  Permalink

Delhi, the city of great MMS scandal DPS and the like.

Mumbai, the city of great dance bars( ofcourse not now).

not just 5 scenes i can include so many scandals

to support my view. above all the film "Page 3" will for sure come for my rescue if i need an additional support in this regard.can i title this article as

"How dare you are a virgin in Mumbai or Delhi?"

you have mentioned about BMW, Hyundai, Ford and other international players in IT space. i dont understand what role these majors have got to play with a city's culture other than that of business. Jus because Chennai houses them should people change their culture. One can change from Amby to Hyundai but how can anyone justify that since he drives Ford or BMW for that matter does he have the license for open

sex.

This city is not against love or lust. But let them be private. That doesnt mean that people here in Chennai are not in tune with the rest of the world. If some one asks me what India is famous for how should

i react?

Chennai is not Chicago.

Bloody Hypocrites
by Vijay Sarma on Oct 03, 2005 07:30 PM  Permalink

It would seem that there is nothing that riles an Indian more than seeing others happy, especially if it is young people in love.

Why else would we burden their enthusiasm with outdated, Victorian notions of propriety...the "Indian Culture" that they speak of is more accurately represented in the vivid sculptures of Khajuraho and Konark than in the school-marmish laws that the English have bequeathed us, having wisely moved on themselves!

Culture is nothing but a convenient garb for people whose only source of happiness lies in preying on that of others.

So much for liberty! Why not just erase that inconvenient word from our constitution and rid ourselves of all this hypocrisy? The Police can then do want they want without the sham of Orwellian explanations.

Vijay
