utter nonsense
by Niru on Oct 04, 2005 12:07 AM  Permalink

This article is utter nonsense. I do not understand how rediff has agreed to publish this. No one, be it big brother or the biggest brother can stop a person from doing anything. It is one's own privacy issue. Culture has nothing to do with this.

Please do not waste your web space by publishing such useless articles, which has no effect other than wasting reader's time.

That is not the point!
by Nash on Oct 03, 2005 11:45 PM  Permalink

Some of the issues that the writer has raised have totally missed the point. The Big Borther may not have the power to interfere in private affairs of the people. But when people choose to do things that are private in public places, do the BBs have to go unnoticed? The writer may not be aware of the certain happennings in chennai along the East Mahab. roads where young women have been victims of harassment. And the BBs are blamed then for not taking action against the culprits. If the writer thinks that it is totally appropriate for school going kids to publicly talk and hold hands and be intimate without doing anything(Actually they might do something but for the BBs intervention)during school hours,i am sorry not all in chennai would subscribe to her views. And regarding the commnets of the famous actress,It was her second round of comments "No educated man would expect his wife to be a virgin at the time of the marriage" and similar comments that elicited angry reactions from the public. The writer has used this column to express her creativity and imagination and along the way she has painted a gross picture of the people and the BBs of chennai! A chennaite (Student) from USA.

Think before u ink.
by Mahendran on Oct 03, 2005 11:44 PM  Permalink

\"How dare you kiss in Chennai\" was quiet an interesting article but most of it did not make sense to me.I appreciate the way you have tried to bring up issues in society that need to be change but could have done all of this is in a more refined way without mocking the traditional customs of Indian culture.
I would stand on your side when it come to scene 3,4 and 5.I am not sure how you justify your article when it comes to scene 1 and 2 where people become a public nuisance.People of the west have started realizing our culture whereas we ourselves have started mocking us.The kind of culture that we are trying to cultivate in our society would lead to several perceived problems like teenage pregnancies and so on.Teenagers are not thought to be ready, either emotionally or financially,to raise children, even if they are able to do so physiologically.Adults(World wide) generally feel that teenagers should not be engaging in sexual activity. The following is a statistics on teenage pregnancy rate(per 1000 females) according to Unicef-USA 52,UK 30,Canada 20.Numbers are going down for these countries while it is going up for us.Is this where we really want to be? Think b4 u ink.

Ridiculous Column with Dump Views, Iam disappointed with Rediff have this column published.
by Sudhakar on Oct 03, 2005 11:27 PM  Permalink

I personally been hurt by seeing this article. This gives complete reverse opinion about our city. Even the statement is true on the article, I beleive India should be rich on culture and Family. I donot think so people should kiss in public or have a disco cultures in india.

The article published here gives an impression that Every engineering student should go to park have a kiss with his Girl Friend or go to Disco's have sex or loss virginity before Marriage.

Iam going to file a case against you guys if you donot apologize for this kind of ridiculous articles. Being a number one web maganize i guess this is not in tollarate level.

People need to Grow up
by Deepak Saini on Oct 03, 2005 11:23 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Well Pal what do I say. Its all in the mind. we need to grow. we need to free ourselves from such limiting thoughts. We need to grow as a culture and develop mature thoughts. Its lots of change which is required and I dont see this happening anywhere in near future beacuse the main issue is we dont want to grow. we just dont like growing coz we love to live like slaves. slaves to our rotten thoughts which our so called society breeds under the umbrella of cultural continuity. With this kind of society we intend to remain same even after 100 more years. No wonder its 2005 and its Chennai most of our India is on the same Page.
