the first thing i did as i read this article is laugh. its funny in a way but then think about it, isnt this subject given undue importance? maybe chennai is a little conservative but hey its free from violence, communal riots and other evils and what more, people dont get raped day in and day out in parks and taxi cabs like in delhi and mumbai.
every place on this earth has something unique that has evolved out of culture and tradition and the people who have inhabited those lands. and the best way to feel the pulse of the city is to be as the city is, to live as and adapt as the city does.
maybe in another decade chennai would be more like bombay with an open culture, more westernized etc. adapt yourself to that lifestyle then. do not try any drastic changes.
i am not taking any sides mind you just that culture and values can be both good and bad depending how you see it. what is good to one is bad to another and vice versa. change is something that is the most certain. people will change, this city will change, culture ethics values everything changes and the best thing for us to do would be to adapt and go along with the changes. things would be just fine then.
I suggest we organize a protest 'kissathon' in Chennai-Madras where all participants of the opposite sex will kiss each other! And keeping with the times, even those of the same sex, for those thus inclined!
This is absolutely utter non-sense. What the hell do these people think? Do they think other states dont have their own cultures. If everyone starts thinking on their lines, then everyone will stay in their own homes and states. Then where does the question of Globalisation arise. We are in 21st Century. Ofcourse some things might not be ethical, then of course these things are personal, and no one has any authority to question these things. We are a democratic country and not any religious based society.
Not only the people in Chennai. But Whole of World. Because we are all products of this First or the Fifth Kiss. If Adam would have not kissed Eve, The trouble would have not started. I think you understand Ms Shobha Warrier. India is a Culturaly bonded Country you say, has been for ages. The Western countries have no Culture as such. Where marriages are on Contract for a day or two. India is not known because of the so called modern people. It is known because of this Culture. People may have their own culture (kissing, hugging, etc), but they form only 0.0000001% of our culture, So Please don't give much importance. Or else you have to take n times of rebirth to understand our culture.
I have been in Chennai for the past two years, and some of the \"scenes\" are purely absurd - a good mix of half-truths and lies at the best, and without any corroborations or explanations.
Are you telling me that the moral police don\'t exist in other cities? You are talking about engineering institutions - obviously you then know which ones, and who runs them. Why don\'t you speak out about them, if you are so concerned? Such institutions exist elsewhere too. If this is one extreme, perhaps Delhi is on the other - what with its MMS scandals and frequent rapes?
Agreed that Chennai is Conservative (yes, a capital \'C\'), and is not as suave or urbane as other metros. However, to generalize the nature of a city based on some specific instances is not right. There is a difference between \'a cop in Mumbai raped a girl\' and \'Mumbai cops rape girls\' - isn\'t it?
It is not without reasons that the first three paragraphs of your article are true.
This article is absolutely ridiculous and paints a picture about chennai which is far from truth.
The author seems to mock our culture and tradition and the people still following it. There are hundreds of colleges, institutions, offices and companies in Chennai and also growing at a rapid pace which negates the authors contention that people of opposite sex not talking to each other is the dictum in chennai.
The author also very unfairly has ridiculed Bhartnatyam. I request rediff not to publish articles which are unfair , biased and not based on truth and facts.
