the first thing i did as i read this article is laugh. its funny in a way but then think about it, isnt this subject given undue importance? maybe chennai is a little conservative but hey its free from violence, communal riots and other evils and what more, people dont get raped day in and day out in parks and taxi cabs like in delhi and mumbai.
every place on this earth has something unique that has evolved out of culture and tradition and the people who have inhabited those lands. and the best way to feel the pulse of the city is to be as the city is, to live as and adapt as the city does.
maybe in another decade chennai would be more like bombay with an open culture, more westernized etc. adapt yourself to that lifestyle then. do not try any drastic changes.
i am not taking any sides mind you just that culture and values can be both good and bad depending how you see it. what is good to one is bad to another and vice versa. change is something that is the most certain. people will change, this city will change, culture ethics values everything changes and the best thing for us to do would be to adapt and go along with the changes. things would be just fine then.
