Death Penalty for Aby Salem?
by Manish Chauhan on Nov 13, 2005 02:32 AM  Permalink

Is is Indian Govt's corruges decision to give in written to portugal govt., not to give capital punishment to Abu. It's important to bring crimimal like Abu back to INDIA & dump him in Indian Jail rather than let him be free on foreign soil & operate his activities from their.

No death penalty
by Karan on Nov 13, 2005 01:53 AM  Permalink

No he shouldnt be given the death penalty. Whatever may be our individual views on the subject, I personally dont support the death sentence, the fact is that the Government of India has assured the Government of Portugal that we will not be applying it in this case. If we do go ahead with the death penalty it will make India a liar and a nation not to be trusted on the smallest of issues. For the Government to even attempt a debate on this would be extremely foolhardy and dangerous.

No point in discussing. He was extradited only on the rule that he will not be given capital punishment.

abu salem

if executives of one soverign state has given undertaking to another soverign state as precondition for extradition to conduct a trial on a accused for crime as serius as the present one judiciary must not have a problem accepting a precondition because finding the truth behind the crime is important not sentencing death penalty to the accused. true outcome of deliberations in a court room will be a precedent to our next generation.

death penalty for salem
by Susheel Shabnam Bhat on Nov 13, 2005 01:26 AM  Permalink

Govt should stick to her undertaking or else Portugal will be a heaven for all other Indian Dons and the govt will not be able to extardite them in future. Portugal will be prefered over Karachi and Sharjah in such a case.

considering that abu salem is ont the last terrorist india is looking for and plus we have to cooperate with other countries we should keep our promise n not give him death penalty
but who stopped the court from giving him 25 years each in all the 8 cases he is being tryed for?
i guess we can punish him and still maintain our promise to portugal

The law must take its course...
by Pathur S. Swaminathan on Nov 13, 2005 01:23 AM  Permalink

I read again and again the asserstion "The law must take its course" when the Shankaracharya of Kanchi was arrested on unsubstantiated charges.

Now I read this poll from rediff, asking if this well known terrorist should be awarded a death sentence. This is the objectivity of our self-prefessed watchdog, our media!!

One rule and a trial for a Islamist terrorist and a trial by the media for a simple, respected Hindu seer. This is not an isolated discrimination, the commie/christist/mullah controlled institutions are destroying the very foundation of a Hindu culture which has given everyone the saction and space to perpetrate these crimes on the civilizational roots of this nation -- with this root uprooted, the country will surely see the balkanization and the associated violence and destruction. Nobody will be inure from its ramifications. I hope all the moderates without prejudice get together and work out a UCC as the first form of national intergration, then an affirmative program based on economic criteria which will provide opportunities and a program for the socially disadvantaged with opportunities to learn and compete (no free bees in this regard).
