India in UN
by sick \'n tired on May 24, 2005 08:50 AM  Permalink

A very good article.
I think, the problem is not in being there. it is in believing in it's virtues and piousness and feeling cheated about it. we are not there to preserve world peace and any such contribution is incidental.we are there to look after own interests.all we have to do is to concentrate on becoming a prosperous nation, and that sounds a far cry.
Incidentally, we have a long record of ignoring our interests to brood over obscure ideologies too seriously.

UN is defunct

I agree that India's policies should reflect a respect for itself. We are
capable of standing on our own and we need to do that. I think as a
country we have been lacking confidence.

Partly agree

Reading the articles and the comments was thought-provocating.

I would say stay in the UN but just as a spectator. Oppose anything anti-indian blindly (like our opposition/ruling party) does in the LS.

This would be like Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement.

Yes

If India has provided far more than its fair share, and has put its soldiers in the line of fire in many tense spots, and still did not get the permanent seat in UN then we should ponder the alternatives and think for ourselves and think in the terms of what exactly has the UN done for India lately. if India doesn't get the Security Council seat with a full veto, then India should walk out of the United Nations. I think it forces UN to take action if we take this drastic action. we did not get anything from the UN in return for all the things we have done beyond our ways.

UN... who cares?
by Nag on May 19, 2005 02:51 PM  Permalink

If you are powerful and economically strong ... then what is UN? US has been doing that and now its more like a ruling of US... and the UNSC are not given to World's second economic powerhouse ... Japan and to world's second most populated country ....India ... and above all there is a stiff resistance from US on this. US is acting as a Big Brother ... so why respect it .... If India sees some serious benifits then ye they should try else withdraw from it or better make a pact with Japan and withdraw together.

Way to go

First the facts, The second most fastest growing nation in Asia; Poised to become superpower by 2020; the most favoured nation in the world for BPO; favourite for all most all the leading technology manufacturers ( Nokia and Seagate)
Now can we just afford to bow down in front of an organization which has always been famous for favouring the so called "p5" nations!

True, that India had never been treated with the respect it always deserved but looking at the india as a nation after 1990-91, the scenario has changed completely,Business world globally eyes India as the best base in the world for setting up business alliances And the so called p5 nations economies are stable bcoz of the base India has provided.

Virgin and Walmart have drawn out plans to enter in to the Indian market. The world has to understand the importance of India as a nation.

I agree with the writer that India should exercise their power by "threatning to move out", However moving out actually could just be the action Un might be hoping for. Thats why i believe, India should stand out from G4 and make the point clear to the UN about its stand in public and let the world all over have the debate over it
