denial of visa
by Kapil on Mar 18, 2005 06:59 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Yes, denial of visa to Mr. Modi is an issue , I am saying this not because I am a political supporter of Mr. Modi, I do say that in Gujarat riots, the role of his government was condemnable and the death of minorities in these riots have put our nation to shame everywhere, as is eveident from the deinal of visa to Mr. Modi but US does not have the right to decide whether Mr. Modi was the culprit for those riots, I think for US, the identity of him as an elected CM should have provided sufficient ground to grant him a Visa. Moreover, if BJP and so called swadeshi leaders are so hurt by this incident, they should take an oath that they will not visit US till Mr. Bush publicly apologises for this act. I am sure none of them have the audacity to do this, that is why people say, "aaj ki raajniti main kewal raaj reh gaya hai, niti khatam ho gayi hai".

RE:denial of visa

As everybody has got their political leanings, they confuse issues. The matter of issuing a visa is left the the country concerned and no one, repeat no one, has a right to dictate terms. Millions of people are issued visas by US embassies and missions all across the globe and, if Narendra Modi has not been issued a visa, it is because USA is considering him to be an undesirable person, contrary to the fact that he may be a Chief Minister of Gujarat or bigwig in BJP. Yes, Narendra Modi, is a very, very desirable person and a great leader for most people of Gujarat, but people outside Gujarat have a very sordid view of this man. Having said that again it is entirely left to USA or, for that matter, any country to issue visas to undesirable elements if it is in their interest.

You say, "BJP and so called swadeshi leaders are so hurt by this incident, they should take an oath that they will not visit US till Mr. Bush publicly apologises." Do you think thick skinned, shamless and corrupt politicians, including the BJP politicians who speak about Hindutva, will miss opportunities to travel to USA, Europe and other places. Kapil, they want to chill out and have a good time.

Denial of visa to Modi: Outrageous
by Dayanand on Mar 18, 2005 06:48 PM  Permalink

The action of American Govt. is outrageous to say the least. Before they teach any lessons to the biggest Democracy in the world, let them put their house in order. Before they talk of religious non-tolerance by India/Indian leaders, lest them forget that the very same leader is elected by the people of Gujarat to lead them, through a fair and democratic poll, after the violences in Gujarat. Can I make an analogy of my neighbor pointing fingers at the dead fly in front of my door while an elephant lie dead in front of his door?!

visa denial
by JAK on Mar 18, 2005 06:48 PM  Permalink

i am no major fan of modi, but the US paranoia tends to cross the line at some point. It's not like the US has set a perfect example for others. I feel the US needs to give a decent explanation for this denial.
As modi asked,Do we deny visas to US diplomats considering the Iraq war?

Denial of US Visa to Narendra Modi
by Vishu Menon on Mar 18, 2005 06:47 PM  Permalink

If there is one reason for George Bush administration to win some admiration from those who love humanity, it is the denial of visa to Modi. The next step would be for someone to take up the matter of genocide in Gujarat and indict Modi for genocide for trial in Hague.

Modi points out that, since he was elected by the people of Gujarat, a denial of visa to him would be an insult to the constitution. Is he forgetting that Saddam Hussein won "100% votes" in the "general election" that preceded the US invasion of Iraq? And that a virtual 100% Germans were behind Hitler during the Third Reich? Perhaps, being a great admirer of Hitler, Modi thinks that the second world war was a great insult to German constitution?

Don't bother about US Visa to Narendra Modi. Withdraw his Indian passport.

Denial of Visa an Insult: Modi
by Dr YNI Anand on Mar 18, 2005 06:24 PM  Permalink

I am not a fan of Mr Modi. However, as an Indian, I feel that the US has crossed all limits of decency in denying the Visa on flimsy grounds. Had the NDA been in power or had he been a central minister, would the US dared to have indulged in such illegal activities? Modi has rightly pointed out, "Tomorrow if the American army chief seeks to visit India, should we look at the US track record in Iraq and deny him a visa?" He has also told that the same US treats Gen Musharraf differently although the human rights violation of Pakistan are well known.

The Indian Government should not take it lying down if ever they are serious about the prestige of India. It is not a matter of "Tit for Tat" but our PM should refuse to accept the invitation extended by the Bush administration to visit US unless they regret the incident and give a diplomatic Visa to Modi. What happens within the country is our concern and our courts are competent enough to castigate Modi if there is any case against him.
