How much does an MP earn ?
by swagat on Aug 25, 2010 03:43 PM  Permalink

Well, we must look at the grimness of the scenario with some serious concern. The MP's are entrusted with the responsibility of taking decisions on behalf of us.It is PERFECTLY allright if they decide to have a hike in their own salaries.Afterall we are entitled to decide what we are going to have for dinner in our own house.Anyways a theif is not always a cleptomaniac. If the money is arranged, maybe he will lose his motive to carry on (except,in case he decides to buy a mine for himself).

How much does an MP earn?
by prasadrekapalli on Dec 17, 2005 11:32 PM  Permalink

The salary and perks that an MP in India earns are by no means a pittance - all the more so when we consider how little the ordinary people in India earn. And a whole lot of people who work a whole lot harder than our venerable Members of Parliament are paid far less than these peoples who are supposed to represent them!

I wonder how many of them have sufficient qualifications to make laws, policies etc.(I am not quite sure how many of our law-makers can understand the implications of the laws they make.) Perhaps some of them are not qualified enought to land any decent job.

A person is guilty of gross misconduct if he exercises his authority to benefit himself. The Board of Directors of a Company cannot raise their remunerations as they please. Our law-makers seem to be a privileged class - and so go about raising their salaries whenever and as ever they please.

In any case, membership of parliament is not a profession or employment. So, perhaps the MPs should restrict themselves to a nominal honorarium.

Raising their salaries is unlikely to make them any more honest. After all, they have raised their salaries often before - and the result is there for us all to see!

do they really deserve all this
by vidhi mehrotra on Dec 17, 2005 11:20 AM  Permalink

as mentioned in the article MPs of our country get enough of salary and allowances. the office of the MP is one of the most prestigious offices of the country and they should be given a respectable amount of money as salary but the thing is that do they really deserve even this much? have we ever seen the session of lok sabha going on in peace? they have not till now realised that thy hold one of the biggest offices of the country and its high time that they should behave in a responsible and decent manner. if they do there job to the satisfaction of the people such question won\'t arise in future.

poor fellows!!! :)
i think what they r getting officially should also be reduced, cause they make unimaginable amounts of cash in unofficial deals and related acts. they maybe leaders no doubt but i guess all the money being splurged on them should be used for the betterment of the infrastructure and society. free travel for what money is paid by the citizens for the same either make it free travel for all including the citizens or scrap such kind of unnecessary priviliges. i pity these guys u know they must be even having one of the best chefs dishing out all kinds of situtation based dishes. ha ha i pity them !!!!

Are Indian Lawmakers getting underpaid.

The subject matter would need to get commented from various angles.Criteria for any compensation package are Quality,Performance, Credibility & a host of other factors..Because of weak Norms for Nomination any person without regard to academic Background can get elected as MP or ,MLA.Even Crminal Background tends to get overlooked. How can such people claim to become Law Makers to decide the destiny of the country. Can we call ourselves healthy Democracy on the same footing as USA or UK where Law Makers have Excellent Background worth the position. If this be so why should an Indian MP get heavily paid for not doing any thing to the country. One can not compare with a CEO either.Overall MPs'Performance & ability do not deserve any major compensation at the cost of Exchequer. They should desist from deciding their Remuneration system.Let there be an Independent Body to work out Salary for MPs on an Objective basis with a system to review the contribution made by the MP during his tenure as MP.If Performance Appraisal is yardstick in every other Sector why leave out MPs from the Same. They are not Gods to get away with any thing while thousands of others are struggling to earn their living despite having very good Background. The time has come to evolve quality criterion for eligibility to get Nominated for RajyaSabha or election to Lok Sabha.Similar Criteria should also be evolved for eligibility to judge as to who should represent a constituency to really work for the Developement of the Constituency.Once such a system comes in,No one will ever be against giving good salary package to Members of Parliament or Legislatures.Until then ,the so called Member does not deserve to call himself a Law maker for how anybody can make a Law for the Country if he does not know what is good & bad or if he is one with a Criminal TrackRecord. It will an Irony if The Law Breakers are Going to be The Law Makers for Our Country. One would shudder to think of such a Contingency emanating. This is where The Election Commission should play an effective Role being objectively backed up by Parliament.Only then we can also proudly proclaim ourselves to be A Top Class Democracy.
