How much does an MP earn?
by prasadrekapalli on Dec 17, 2005 11:32 PM

The salary and perks that an MP in India earns are by no means a pittance - all the more so when we consider how little the ordinary people in India earn. And a whole lot of people who work a whole lot harder than our venerable Members of Parliament are paid far less than these peoples who are supposed to represent them!

I wonder how many of them have sufficient qualifications to make laws, policies etc.(I am not quite sure how many of our law-makers can understand the implications of the laws they make.) Perhaps some of them are not qualified enought to land any decent job.

A person is guilty of gross misconduct if he exercises his authority to benefit himself. The Board of Directors of a Company cannot raise their remunerations as they please. Our law-makers seem to be a privileged class - and so go about raising their salaries whenever and as ever they please.

In any case, membership of parliament is not a profession or employment. So, perhaps the MPs should restrict themselves to a nominal honorarium.

Raising their salaries is unlikely to make them any more honest. After all, they have raised their salaries often before - and the result is there for us all to see!
