Who needs secularism
by Naheed on Aug 27, 2005 02:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I take exception to the author mentioning Burkha and Sati in the same vein.
Burkha or Hijab is for the modesty of women. Muslim women wear the hijab not because the muslim men have forced them to do so . It is because Allah has commanded them to do so. We muslims dont want our women to be marketed on the streets in the name of Art & culture.
Islam stands for upliftment of women. When 1400 yrs ago women were being buried alive.......Islam gave economic rights to women.
Covering the body modestly does not amount to opression.
We muslims are totally aginst objectification of women.
women are being used as objects for business development, leading to moral depravity and the degradation of the soul.

Naheed seems to be still living in Eighteenth century mindset. He says that no men are "forcing" women to wear burqas; go to Saudi Arabia and find out yourself, they not only force Muslim women but also other women who dont subscribe to Islam. If Allah has commanded that women should wear burqas, so be it; but why should the nonAllahs issue fatwas about it? Let those who do not carry out the command of Allah get punished on the Judgement Day; are these men duly appointed Agents of Allah to issue their own commands? And do you mean to say that all those women who do not wear burqas are immodest? It is a stupid thought and can only enter a sick mind.

Whither Secularism?
by Amit K on Aug 27, 2005 02:46 PM  Permalink

As the writer has very rightly pointed Secularism as it is practiced in India can be defined in just two words - "Minority Appeasement". One set of standards for the Majority community and another for the Minorities.

SECULARISM
by SUNIL KUMAR on Aug 27, 2005 02:24 PM  Permalink

I fully agree with the author. The word secular as we Indians, particularly used by the politician, are using is to make one believe that he tolerates all the religions. We must think about this twice. Marxists say that they are secular because they do not believe in any religion. But they believe in the marxism. They are intolerent when anybody criticises marxism. Even they will kill persons for the sake of marxism like in Kerala and West Bengal. So how will they become Secular.

Its time when we learn some more b4 blatantly putting forth our views
by Radically rational on Aug 27, 2005 02:24 PM  Permalink

read this "electoral politics in the Time of change" by Yogendra Yadav

and "Affirmation without reservation" Economic and political Weekly July 3,2004 by Pratap Bhanu Mehta..

all will definitely realize the need of affirmative action for the traditionally oppressed groups....though reservation ought to be substituted but the qustion is by wht ??in 1950 nd even now nobody has a clue wht else can b used for affirmative action..thts y it continues..nd abt the profound threats of reservation...in pvt sector anyways the recruitments are based on favoritism and not soleley on merit..as per some stats more than 90% openings in organized sector are never publicly reported. wht does tht mean?..

if u go thru the readings i have suggested above then u will get to know wht the ral issues are..just trying to say something which ur dad or mayb ur grandfather told u doesnt mean tht u r saying facts...my prof was arguing nd he was rite tht to imagine urself in shoes of the debilitated, deprived, oppressed and tortured fellow beings from the so called backward castes wud b horrible..people who used to commit atrocities wonn b able to stand the same for a moment if they r at receing end.

Secular word
by Yashpal on Aug 27, 2005 02:21 PM  Permalink

Word secular in the present senerio of the countary, itself dosenot have anymeaning left.if I just ask you to look arround the city you are leaving, then tell which out of the top 25 to 50 towns in the counary where the people with minority weather muslim or sikh or christanity are not leaving or are we having quarl with each other on each other relions, I dont think that middle class people or people in the education category have any such grut. No doubt as far as constitution is concerened, it was the demads of time to see india as one nation. Otherwise the dominance of the princely state might had taken it back and away from the modern world. And I think the some form of backwardness we have in terms of Internation status might have not been here if we had foloowed the seclarism to its true extent. Yashpal Gogia
