Dear Sir , This news article is an excellent piece of work done by rediff team that shed light on the behind the scene happenings. The very sensitive issue is discussed in a very thought provoking and intelligent manner. The articles brings out the finer points of the Indo-Us treaty . Thanks you, Regards, Ankit Jain
the next time someone asks "But India is so poor. More than 230 million people live below the poverty line." in the context of N bombs & tech.. I am gonna strangle them...
open ur eyes..
why do we have N bombs??? Is it for Kalam & his mates to play with in parliament gardens & to satisfy their cravings???
The idea is to protect our Country.. to be able to decide how our country should be run by ourselves...
If we can run our country ourselves, this poverty( imposed on us due to 700+ yrs of colonialism) can be conquered & wiped off...
if our secuirty is not strong enough, then our country will have been run based on the interests of other countries..
that will mean we can't have access to energy sources & will be severely restricted in employment generation.. this means the poverty will get worse???
so its no N bombs vs poverty.
Its N tech/bombs as one of the tools that can be used to remove poverty..
I salute Mr Satish Chandra for his being candid, frank & forthright in expressing his views. The American Establishment / Government wants to cap India's nuclear programme and the recently concluded treaty between India and the US should be modified and if need be, abrogated.Nothing should be done that will jeopardise India's National Security which should be the concern, not only of our Government but all patriotic Indians. The bottom line: Like you can not trust General Pervez Musharraf, the Butcher of Freedom & Democracy in Pakistan; so also, you can not trust the American Establishment / Government, which is like a rogue elephant in 'Mast'. colonelrajan@rediffmail.com
Indian defence establishment is a creation of Indian Cconstitution and its purpose is to defend the Constitution. So there can be no conflict of interest with US in this deepest aspect of policy.
There are other strategic and interest conflicts but none so severe to escalate to nuclear level. While it is true that in the past there were severe capping pressure in the past on missile, nuclear and other fields but are they are not relevant today, the talk now is of joint production and even joint R&D. As mutual trust builds this will probably extend to nuclear as well.
Separation of civil and military establishment makes sense as the grades of technology are quite different. Further it will enable private participation, even international participation, raise safety standards considerably and lead to massive increase in generation capacity.
