Yeh hai Mumbai meri Jaan
by Rathinder Bhat on Aug 10, 2005 04:42 PM  Permalink

Mumbai, The New York Of INDIA. WOW the same Coast Line, the same view as you approach the Gate Way of India coming back from Elephanta....so near...still so Far.

Mumbai, The Shanghai of India. WOW..The same ingrediants...commercial hub, Huge Business Houses, Cross Cultures....so near...still so Far.

Could we have an independent Committe of World Renowned Architects( Indians/Non-Indians) Look into the mess and propose some rewamping.

Could we then, have a Private Sector CEO like a Ratan Tata oversee the Project Completion, phase by phase.

Could we frame a few simple rules of putting people behind bars( not the Dance Bars...pleaseeee), if people intentionally or not, dirt the city.

Lets work together from places like Mumbai becoming a bad example. Let us give back Mumbai and rest of India , the glory it deserves.

And some one tell the Govt, to get back the Seat for Mumbai in the Glorious cities of the World rather than trying for a Seat in UN.

Is some one listening !!!

We should organise our city by better administration and with support of people.First of all I want to say remove existing administration and replace with them with IIT,IIM people who are best decision maker.
Second , Broden the roads. If people's shop or houses suffering due to it .Give them some fascility ,compensation and some outside land and remove from them asap.As Citizen we should understand that we are part of this city and we should give something to our city. Now This is time for our turn to devote.Still If they will not agree then keep buldoser on it.For one person's suffering ,we cannot suffer whole city.Third we don't want any elections, leaders should come from top managment universities like IIM,IIT.Heading committe recruited by President will head these peoples.City administration is nothing but managment.I am sure these IIM-Managment people can handle our city very well.
Complete bann on plastics. All Pan-patti(Pan shop) who is selling gutkha and other mouth spitting things should be shut Off.For City Bus stop there should be one more line so that it would not block traffic. If we are making bridges then make sure that No signal system should exist down or up

Ignoring Calamity is the Greatest Calamity.
by Prasad Kowli on Aug 10, 2005 04:31 PM  Permalink

What has the rains done ? Not only it has poured down a particular city or state; it affected nationwide by pouring down the issues which were on the public mind before rains came in to play .
What we know is that the natural calamities are bound to occur in the future; but what we dont know is that when they will come and in what form.

Do we have a disaster recovery plan ?
Should our politicians put our heads down and run away from their responsibilities by averring it as a natural calamity ?
Ignoring Natural Calamity is the Greatest Calamity. And it hurts me to say that our government has been a part of it .
I also like to applause for the great spirit that mumbaikars had shown in such a crisis. The Praja was helping each other while , Raja and its Sena giving some impulsive statements; may be due to the inclusion on some new turkeys from the Bollywood.

Plan for the best for a better tommorrow and this must be not confined only to mumbai but for the entire nation.

My View Part 2
by Akash on Aug 10, 2005 04:30 PM  Permalink

So there should be a constant fear on person who is even thinks of doing it.

4.      One the system is sincere general public will be mannered. Because it is not possible to change public habits just by TV advertisements or road hoardings.
Unless there are no rules it is difficult to change people.

5.      Local trains in metro should not be allowed to be over loaded. So at least there is some safety and some manners. I can understand the amount of people travelling. But once if every train is on time there should not be problems.

If the traffic is maintained properly and more mannered the amount of travelling in bus or metro will be equally same so the crowd also get distributed.

Conclusion

Every thing is interrelated of course and obvious general public should have awareness But it is not possible 2 change habits of general public at once. So there should be more strict norms so people are bound to follow that which turns to habit.

We basically have rules and laws to everything but the problem is it is not followed correctly.

So the person managing this should be more sincere to see that norms are managed properly.

Would like 2 hear about this from other writers and would also like to disscuss.

Mumbai Rains
by Shubhadeep Sinha on Aug 10, 2005 03:47 PM  Permalink

The drainage system in mumbai and the suburbs needs to be improved drastically. Its archaic. Iam aware of a place in Vasai, where the mumbai rains couldn't cause much havoc purely because of good drainage system in that area. This drainage system was put in place with collaboration of international bodies.
Something similar can help the rest of the mumbai/suburbs.
Also flood management experts should be called in to give training to our mumbai authorities. This should have been done after tsunami experience since there's a coastline even in mumbai and suburbs.
Also, where are our famed filmstars/NGOs who claimed to have actually worked in tsunami affected villages?
Lastly, we should have mumbai rain- floods benefit fund as we had for tsunami affected people, so that there is no shortage of money/ relief materials for the people.

First atleast put the dust bins and spit boxes
by shweta amte on Aug 10, 2005 02:53 PM  Permalink

I would like to request the most basic thing ie hygiene. Government should put the dustbins and spit at regular intervals on the roads and public places.
The road to the dustbin should be approachable ie the garbage shouldn't be scatterred all around.
Clean toilets should be available.

Heavy fines should be levied if rules are not followed.

mumbai.......
by prashant pandey on Aug 10, 2005 02:37 PM  Permalink

First and foremost thing to be kept in mind is that in India all the problems are interrelated you cannot just develop mumbai by making some master plan and feel that the prblems will be over we have to go to the root causes. the main problem is that of migration of poor people, and they are the most badly hit during calamities like this which occoured few days back, the people living in slums, why do they migrate, why do they flock to mumbai, the reasons are obvious, in search of future, which they find gloomy in rural places, so they will keep on coming whatsoever you do, you expand mumbai to 100 kms. or more, 5 years down the line the area will get saturated. Mumbai is a land of oppurtunities and as long as people will find oppurtunities there or in any thriving metro like bangalore or hyd. these problems are bound to appear. So some insight into the root causes of problem are needed. after that many alternatives would be there like building sea links, rapid mass transit system, etc. This type of problems may be solved to some extent by relieving the burden on our metros by promoting medium cities (35 top cities of india having more than 1 M population.)

Back to basics
by A. Banerji on Aug 10, 2005 02:30 PM  Permalink

What I am writing is not really feasible in today's world ... just food for thought.

Mahatma Gandhi wanted a holistic development of the nation. Instead, we blew up the cities like balloons.

Attitude ... everybody uses the word in a competitive sense. What if a bit non-materialistic attitude is cultivated from a young age?

Random thoughts - my two paise!
