The only way Mumbai will get cleaned is to raze the city and start all over again with proper planning not keeping in mind the current population, but 50 years from now. And with the existing city, bury all those corrupt politicians.
Mumbaikars tend to have a sense of pride about something. Yes, it is the financial capital, home of the film industry. But, all this is the British legacy.......they thought that being a coastal area, a city could be developed, thus Bombay came into being. Post independance, the only contribution of Bombay has been Asia's largets slums, a dreaded underworld which could only have developed because of criminal-politics nexus, overcrowded local trains(for some silly reason people are very proud of 'locals' in Mumbai, just have a look at the transport system of other big cities around the world) ,communal riots, a good electricy supply only at the cost of rest of Maharashtra. And now...the city is dreaming of being the next Shanghai!
Ramesh, I don't understand all the laments about the British should still have been here. And how will the British care more about our people than us? The only infrastructure they built was when it benefitted them and at our cost. When the British were here, we were exporting food during famines. Our famines were so severe that whole portions of our population were wiped out. We have not had a single famine since independence. Let us give our young democracy more time - we have been independent (left in poverty after being looted by the British) for only 2 generations and have made a lot of progress, though it doesn't seem so in the midst of this tragedy. We have a long way to go and many major reforms to make the dismal govt sit up. Don't praise the British but elect politicians based on their performance and don't let them play their divisive politics for our votes! We make the govt, we need to elect wisely and make them 'listen'.
Just compare the leadership of New York with the leaders of Mumbai. Two financial capitals. Where are the MPs and MLAs of Mumbai? What are they doing for their respective constituencies ? This is what happens when we choose people as leaders who do not have sufficient credibility to be political leaders.
Mumbai floods pretty often because of the low lying areas. Is there any plan to build dykes ? If Holland can build dykes then why cant Mumbai ? As someone else observed, where is the tax money going ? Why do we have so many people at the Airports, for example, sitting idle and doing nothing. I bet our government employs 5 people for the work of one person.
Every department head needs to show some kind of accountability. Another option is to privatise as much as possible which we are doing but at a very slow pace. Otherwise nothing is ever going to happen.
it is a tragedy ofcourse, but wasnt something like this predicted? scientists have been tryin hard to make people aware of the changing weather, global warming. but majority doesnt care. for me its mother natures backlash. its not just mumbai..this is happening all over the world! secondly, its painstaking to suggest anything to the govt...it seems as long as the families of politicians are safe they dont care abt rest of the janta. next time before sayin "mera bharat mahaan" think abt it. 50 years is good enough for a country to atleast have a proper rescue operation!
I wonder if any of our "esteemed" politicians ever read this backlash or is it that they just dont care? I saw quite a few interesting notes by the people of India, as to how the govt should run, and I sincerely hope that somehow our PM gets to read what the people really think of our political structure. I know that Dr. Manmohan Singh is an honest/intelligent man. Lets hope he can do something different. India can never become a super power by just testing nukes! The politians so easily forget that other such developed nations (we are tyring to compete with)have more than just nukes! I wonder if there is any other developed nation that has such high level of corruption in every walk of life (it has probable become a part of our culture that we were so proud of). This alone is the root cause for this nations suffering (be it the floods or the earthquakes, or the religious clashes and the list goes on). If people who run this country are honest so much more can happen in this great country!
I think people from Bombay are such unique that they shown the same spirit which they had shown in 1993 after bomb blast..... Salam Bombay .
We can certainly expect effectiveness and promptness from government in times of disasters. However it seems that the problem is felt more due to lack of communications to the public of what is happening and what steps are being undertaken. TV / Radio channels should have used their best time to inform people as to what should be done..... However is in such bad time lets not blame anybody but do what best we can and help the machinery to clear uo the mess....
Hello, After having gone through all these right ups it seems people'e expectations from Govt are too much and over expectations subject them to miserable conditions. But they should keep one thing in mind .'GOD helps those who helps themselves". Secondly it was a historical disaster and National Calamity and nothing was possible against such disaster's.So instead of expecting too much from Government we should first of all try to help ourselves and then GOD is there to help but it is not possible for any Government to do anything in advance.Whatever is possible has been and is being done by State Govt & Central Govt .But it is natural that people will find flaws in the system. But I would compliment state Govt for initiating help as early as possible.
The irony is at this moment I didn't hear any political leader helping the people of Mumbai. Well it is not the election time, if it is then leaders would visit Mumbai like Mrs. Gandhi visited the AP before election to give her sympathy to the famalies of the farmers who committed suicide. People voted for her !
I sincerely feel the blame lies with our own people for the current or any type of disaster. We ourselves are corrupt and we elect corrupted leaders who know only how to mint money. We get what we sow. We know very well before any kind of calamity strikes anywhere in India it is only god who can help us not any govt. because the whole system is rotten. I pray to God that he should give all of us the knowledge and intelligence to elect sincere leaders who can help us in any kind of calamities. It is a wake up call and especially to the younger generation to get into politics and take controll of the betterment of India. Don't let the corrupted politicians decide our and our children's future. Who knows what is in store for us in the coming future. Prepare now and start praying.
