GN, Very true

Your two points are really true. That is what makes us different from others. That is why Indians have peace of mind even when they are not rich. We have the ability to see our negative side and the positive side of others. That is what makes us richer in culture.

To identify the negative side is indeed good step to rectify it.

But our media is projecting this issues not for rectifying but for making money by displaying it on international market.

Did you ever happen to see the slums in France, Latin America? I think, many of our members may not be even knowing much worst slums exists in this part of world? because these things are not much projected into international market.

- i feel it like the beggars who displaying his rotten hand to people requesting the money.

indirectly we are defaming the countries image in international market. showing our progress downwards. Every country have problems, but it is the Asian Trio who are more interested to display their dirty side to the world.

- i feel it like the beggars who displaying his rotten hand to people requesting the money.

and the foriegners come to visit shed crocodile tears and experss their surprise. ( as if they did not seen much worst situation back home)

more irritating is the people like mr.Secular india, who go along with this foreigners and will even goupto the level of using a stick to scratch the wound and highlight the puss. then enjoy displaying such rotten wounds to outsider and they feel they are doing a great job.

These people dont know how to apply medicine to the wound and take care of them, rather than making the situation a mockery in front of outsider.

AMERICA has the worst slums in the world; where the beggars kill each other for even a dollar; in India there are poor people still they value tradition of family, unity, even in poverty they live with pride, they are spiritual also, many NGOs are alert and helping out street children ; doing good work to society

hey Maya - illusion - where do you live ? Do you know how women are beaten up and raped every single in the slums of India. How their men abandon them after having five kids through them WITHOUT exception. There are "good slums" in Bombay no doubt which has some educated people with middle class values - folks who earn some money and ashamed to go back to their families in villages. But thats it.

Slummer Madonna
by Kaushik Ganguli on Jan 09, 2008 01:37 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Madonna is no stranger to slumming. Back in 1979 when she had left her home in Detroit, she was a dancing extra in Patrick Hernandez's troupe (Born to be Alive). At that time, she used to hunt in the garbage vats for a half eaten sandwhich and eat that over a day to sustain herself.

Only in 1983 when her debut single 'Holiday' was a hit could Madonna afford the small sustainences of life.

Now in her 51st year, she has come to Colaba and has eaten at a local Udipi restaurant where I also fortunately or unfortunately frequent for Dosa, Uttapam and Upma Sheera. This place is quite ordinary but now they will jack up the prices and put up a photograph of Madonna with her signature. I do not think I will be able to visit this place after this.

Madonna is unlikely to tour India in the future. Her music is on the wane. It is also a pointer to a fact that Bombay's poshest district, Colaba is also full of slums and therefore she has gone slumming. It is also near the Taj where she is staying. She obviously did not go to Dharavi which would have shocked her beyond belief.

The funniest truths - But still we want to live with that
by GN on Jan 09, 2008 01:20 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Every foreigners coming to india more interested to see and show to the world , the dirtiest side only. The poor beggars, the slums?

More worst situations are there even in the super power country like America. mostly dense populated by negros. even worst than our Dharavi. But do ever you had seen photos ? and Indian photographers and celebraties visiting this areas? Indians are not interested to see the dark side of other countries. (even if you dare to go near these areas, you will not able return back with your camera)

But foreigners are more interested to get photos of dark sides in INDIA, why they dont go and visit much worst areas in their countries.??

When we visit any other coutnry, we search for beauty and infrastructure and will avoid unwanted, unhygienic areas in our photos. Even our Media more interested to highlight indias darker side to the world, slums, beggars etc etc.

Even the foreign media will not much air their dark side, as it may defame the countries image.

There is indeed a difference in approach of we Asians and the Western World.
- We look and admire their positive acheievements and Highlight our negative sides to them.
- They boast only about their positive acheivements and highlight our negative sides.

The slums in india are indeed a problem to be solved immediately.
- people living under conditions below the basic necessity to survive.
- breeding ground for anti social elements.

but we cant blame govt. alone, the huge number of migrants flowing in and even after govt. providing flats to them under many schemes, these people will sell or rent to somebody else and then go and setup new slums.

The people who are allotted flats in kurla, dharavi, mankhurd, dheonar areas are now developing a new Slum in KALVA, Mumbra and Diva Areas.
The only requirement is to put some parties board and flag and as an additional precaution, a temple, a masjid. or a baba saheb ambedkar statue.

Shame on Maharashtra

Remove these slums.... these are migrants and have bought shame to Maharashtra!!!!
by True Indian on Jan 09, 2008 01:04 PM
Thats true.... but if you live in hut, then also you can maintain it, and the surrounding by:
1) Keep the area clean and tidy.
2) dont shit in open.
3) dont get a batallion with you. if you come alone, first make sure that you get a proper place, food and money then call other people from your Jamat.
4) Dont accept a low salary, because you are offered less, or other are taking less. due to this, cheap labours become available and create these slums.

More should be done at government level:
1) Issue id card to every person in this country.
2) there should be online system to access individual profile.
3) Any person travelling out of state (even district), has to pay a tax to the state (and to the district) he works. this money should be used to build infrastructure. For e.g. If any person (any means any) person works in Maharashtra (mumbai) from bihar or any part of country, has to pay 1000 Rs. flat tax per annum. out of this 1000, 200 goes to district administration and remaining 800 goes to state administration for keeping the surrounding clean, developing infrastructure. Every person has to carry a card, which indicates the payment of tax. Any government official should have right to check or collect the tax payment online. Same is appl

Dear Friend,
1. The place she visited is Maharstrian koli Area and All Kolis stay in Jhopdis in that area.
2. The Area belongs to Christians and Maharastrian Community.

I supprt your idea of giving Identity card to those coming to Mumbai like work permit, education permit, temorary permit. But do you this is just like dream bcs congress is more intrested in Muslim Votes and majority of Bangladeshi migrants are helped by Congress to get ration Cards I have seen politicians doing that. So first kick out congress. The best e.g. is delhi where this concept was put in dust bin withiin 2 days of announcement

F1rangs at it again!
by Boomshine Saigon on Jan 09, 2008 12:53 PM  Permalink

I know slums are a very real part of india in every city but what amazes me is how these f1rangs decide to visit only the slums or only some presidential suite in a five star hotel...as if there's nothing in between....but i won't blame them...probably they are curious about what amount of sh1t indians can tolerate.....indians really do not have the required civic sense because for a long time our society has been largely rural...even today, throwing garbage out side, beyond the compound wall is a normal thing in cities like nagpur...where people expect a cow to come and eat it!!! it's sick...we're to be blamed for this condition where foreigners remember india as a really filthy place!!
