I think Amar Sigh reaised the issue, once mooted by Leftists to show left would reendorse the proposal sending industrialists running to him and PMO where underhand deals worth crores could be struck and deployed for horse trading before the cruicial trust vote. AKC
The Government should first impose high taxes, not only on cigarettes and liquor, but also on those who smoke and drink. The damage done by smokers and drunkards to the society at large exceeds the damage done by Reliance or other private companies. But in our country, the biggest drunkards are black money owners.

How about having windfall tax on slums and street hawkers who encroach public land and hence force people to spend more fuel in traffic jams

You are living in a fool's paradise if you think that such noble things will ever be implemented. Why should a person join politics at all ? Do you expects politicians to be saints ?

I agree the public will not follow these rules so dont expect a politicician to follow them. introspect oneself and then expect from others...

No, they should be taxed more... the destruction done by drunkards to the societyis huge.
70% of road accidents in this country is due to drunken driving. Of course, you will not understand unless your own near or dear becomes a victim.

How about windfall tax on all people who drink and who smoke? That would be a great way to save the country and also reduce the health problems due to drunkardness.

THE WPT SHOULD BE IMPOSED ON ALL THE MINISTERS ACCORDING TO THEIR PORTFOLIOS AS THEY EARN MOST SOON AFTER GETTING THE PORTFOLIOS . SECOND IT SHOULD BE IMPOSED ON THOSE MP AND MLA WHO CHANGE SIDE ON HORSE TRADING
The FM and Petroleum Minister has time and again reminded that the Oil Marketing companies are losing more than Rs 10K crores a month because of the subsidy on Petroleum products. Ultimately the onus of paying comes either on the tax payers or share holders of the Oil Marketing companies.
All this while private refiners like Reliance are raking in huge gross profits of more than 1000 crores a month. WPT will ensure that the burden is equitably shared amongst those companies making abnormally high profits because of the high crude prices. ONGC is already contributing a substantial sum by way of discounts and there is no reason why Reliance should not be asked to also pitch in for a worthy cause.
Otherwise the debt burden by way of Oil bonds will become unmanageable and the government will be left with no choice but to increase the tax rates across categories. Considering the difficult situation, an early and quick decision in favour of WPT will ease the situation considerably.

- Reliance was forced to close down the petrol pumps because it could not sell petrol at subsidised rates that the PSU's were selling.

then where was the govt when a month back reliance had to shut down all of its petrol pumps across teh country bcoz govt oil marketing firms got the subsidies while reliance essar n like didnt get anything....

The Oil Marketing companies are selling the fuels at a fixed price unlike Private companies who are free to charge any price. That is considered a part of the govt attempt at stabilizing prices. Hence the subsidy. Unlike the private companies, the PSU's do not have the option of closing down the outlets and cutting the losses.

All those talking in favour of Windfall tax may please answer this: 1. why this clamour was not there when oil prices were low. 2. Is the Govt subsidizing the pvt oil companies? If not whether it would be legimitate to impose tax on them now just because of the rise in oil prices? 3. What about the tremendous amount of risk and investment by these pvt oil companies have taken ? 4. The pvt oil companies are already paying income tax excise etc. Why should they be taxed again.
Basically people have strong views in this case because of the alleged involvement of the Ambanis and the views on Amar Singh in the matter. However, we must see it from a logical and legal aspect. If the Govt acts arbitarily in the matter no pvt player would ever risk such high investment ventures in India again.

In fact all investment by private players in oil industry should be subsidized

1. Windfall Tax is not an ordinary tax and is only thought of in extreme situations. 2. The Govt offers various incentives for Pvt Ltd companies and the EOU status for RIL is one of them. In the past, whenever any industry has gone through a crisis, the govt has extended a helping hand. A case in point is the Textile Mills in Mumbai. Therefore when any industry is doing fabulously well, the govt can logically ask it for an extra contribution. 3. No body is asking that these companies should be taxed so hard that they turn loss making. The request is for a limited period until the crisis blows over. 4. Every industry is paying those taxes and eventually recovering from the consumer. No big deal.

what crisis is going to blow over?. Oil prices will never go back to 40 dollars per barrel.
did anyone ask for IT industry to be taxed?. They are STILL making windfall profits
We have come to a state where the politicians have ruined this country. We could handover our country to some management team on a retainer basis probably. It is only the tolerance of our people that has kept a revolution at bay. Inflation at a record high, water shortages, pathetic food distribution system, abysmal medicare for the common man, education system being continually damaged and yet our people tolerate bad governance...
