Shut up and dont give the impression that Mumbaikars are stupid. As though people dont live a dignified life outside Mumbai, elsewhere in the country. More people in Mumbai are living a life of indignity than anywhere else in the world. Just one look at the slums by the side of the rly tracks, drains, and the story of the real Mumbai lies there. Dont mask it using names like Mayanagari. Remember, once the rest of the country starts developing, there will be a stagnation, and people wont clamour to go there like before. Already that reverse drain has started in my own native village. So many of them are coming back from Mumbai.

Delhi also leads in Corruption
by Abhinav Bhatnagar on Jul 12, 2008 07:51 PM  Permalink

How about measuring corruption money, RAPES, THEFT, MURDERS
Welcome to DELHI.
Indians have little civic sense and don't care what happens beyond their 4 walls, so all cities are becoming Rat holes.
WELCOME TO INDIA

Mumbai is still the best, will remain the best.
by samwise on Jul 12, 2008 07:40 PM  Permalink

I completely disagree with this report.
Mumbai city is 3 times smaller than Delhi but still is the financial capital. It is surrounded by water, so cannot expand like Delhi.
When you talk of Delhi NCR, it includes many cities of dirrerent sates:
Noida from UP, Gurgaon from Harayana.
and also Ghaziabad and Faridabad cities come in Delhi NCR. Dont compare 5 cities with just Mumbai alone.
Delhi is hoisting Common Wealth Games in 2010. For this it is getting lots of funds from Central Govt. This does not happen with other cities.

Still Mumbai has better work culture which matters the most. And if Navi Mumbai airport comes up within 5 years, and the 2 Navi Munbai SEzs develop, Mumbai will remain the commercial capital.

Delhi city is a state in itself. So all income collected does not got to rural areas for development. Delhi gets all the income back for its development.
But cities like Mumbai and Bangalore are cities in states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. They contribute more to rural development of their respective states.

From here

the tiny piece of land, full of slums, sewage, filth & people that you call Mumbai, Bombay or whatever, is responsible for over 35% of India's national income. If it wasn't for the enterprising nature of the Mumbaiite (regardless of his regional background), this country wouldn't be what it is. All the money that flows out of Mumbai as taxes are used to develop undeserving cities like Delhi etc. to develop them & the resilient Mumbaiite gets nothing. With all this money that it generates, if it still has crumbling infrastructure, Delhi (& its stupid politicians) is to blame. Its just a matter of time friends. Mumbai is now in a doling out mood & this wont last forever. Come hell or high water, this city has it in it to resurge out of every predicament. Enjoy your development days & wait for the dark horse to take lead.

Shame on Rediff
by Atul K on Jul 12, 2008 07:23 PM  Permalink

Mr Ninan,
First of all congrats to one more rediff editor who can make country divided based on region and language. Eg of Shiv sena was in deed a very wrong here. If you have little idea then ask your self why mumbai is been ruled by Shiv Sena in civic? (Of couse don't be fooled your self by saying they looted election booth ... mind you this is not Bihar for such elction booh looting).
Secondly Mr Ninan by his convinience forgets about the tax collection from mumbai.

Thirdly how much money is been allocated for development of Delhi and Mumbai/ year must be told here.

All the best rediff for increasing hit count of u r site. Before independance British brought ppl for few pennys and now you selling your self for few pennys.

Good Luck
Atul

MUMBAI or DELHI as the financial capital
by rajesh prajapati on Jul 12, 2008 07:17 PM  Permalink

Bertrand Russel in his analysis on POWER, whether it is economic, financial, or political and it's transformation from one to the other has very vividly described the inter-changeability of financial power into political power and ultimately all power gravitates towards political power. Delhi, for long ruled by the licence raj has always had the political power and it was but a matter of time that all power would gravitate towards it AT THE COST of others. If Delhi, is not yet a financial capital, it will eventually be as all political power will attract the finance like a magnet.

Major reasons
by amrit on Jul 12, 2008 06:54 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The major reason for Mumbai ever becoming the commercial capital of India was the harbor and the trading castes from nearby regions (Gujjus, Parsis).
What has happened now is that both those assets are fast losing their meaning. Air cargo is faster and as good as sea cargo. And business skills are no longer limited to calculating and deceptive methods of the trading communities, but require more foresight and ethics (the major success story that serves as example is that of Narayan Murthy). As a result, the factors that have become more important in determining the economic competency of a region/ city are the infrastructure, quality of life, cosmopolitanism, and code of conduct. Delhi/Noida/Gurgaon definitely scores more than any other Indian metro area is these aspects. That is why NCR is increasingly becoming economically important. However, it is untrue to say that it has already overturned Mumbai's status. Mumbai still enjoys the inherited advantage of rich tycoons and big names. However, if Mumbai does not improve itself soon, even those would be forced to move elsewhere. BTW, it is not the immigrant population that is to blame for the deplorable situation of Mumbai. In fact, Mumbai wouldn't be Mumbai if it was not for the immigrants.

India needs a new capital

Move the capital to a centrally located region, and build a brand new futuristic city. Delhi is too uninspiring !

Delhi has places like Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, India Gate, President's Palace, Parliament House, all of which are architectural wonders. What has Mumbai got? Garbage and Raj Thakrey?

Absolutely agree with you! Delhi's growth is only because it is the political capital and has grown at the cost of others' tax payers' money! Otherwise it is a heartless city to live in, with no respect for the women folk by and large!@
