by RajneeshChandraMohan Jain on Jan 19, 2008 10:32 AM  Permalink

Why only PHds ??

I passed Electrical engineering 20 years back with distinction. Now I don't know a damn thing about Electrical Engineering. I should be stripped of my Engineering degree.

PhD and validity
by Nagarajan Viswanathan on Jan 19, 2008 10:26 AM  Permalink

PhD is only a recognition of a persons total knowledge, dedication and devotion to the subject.
it takes anything between 4 to 8 yrs to get one after a masters degeree.most indians get it only towards their mid 40s, that too after a great struggle.there is hardly any incentive to get one.it is true that non PhDs do better in corporate life at times.after getting a doctrate, people teach, work, write papers, conduct seminars, assist as guide, do research, and write books.it is not that they sit at home and while away their time.all these activities add value to a person.we need to encourage students to get a doctrate, and get involved in teaching and research.keeping a time frame maynot be a good idea for PhDs

Author must be an arts group guy
by free market on Jan 19, 2008 10:26 AM  Permalink

It is clear that the author is an idiot Arts group type. A few days back he wrote how great the White-skinned people are because they base their ideas on morals! Never mind that they support all sorts of dictators and terrorists and brand those who call for EQUALITY (uniform civil code) as Hindu fundamentalists.

What is it Mr. Raghavan? You got admission only in arts group after barely passing your school?

Ph D : what is the measuretape?
by GenX on Jan 19, 2008 10:20 AM  Permalink

What a one-sided view! Measuring out-put will all depend on what the PhD person is hired for; if for education, he is not supposed to publish..if for further research, the publications are judged by the standerd of the journals, and the 'real experts' know it luckily. A good publication speaks for itself, and it is not difficult to spot one - I had a colleague who was not Ph.D. but had published with first authorship in such a journal, she was sent a research proposal of a senior scientist for review (by DBT)! This incidence made my confidence in our national bodies grow. Otherwise, you are not sure if you are judged by a right person, if not, that makes one feel very depressed. We do face situations where we have to explain the importance of our work (which is so self explanatory for a person from the same field)to our 'referee' which would not be the case in the west. Here, administrative bosses play a double role of scientific bosses - whithout ever doubting their abilities, then one is left with no choice but doing that 'naukari' and try to find ways of doing justice to one's field.

by tanuj sharma on Jan 19, 2008 10:19 AM  Permalink

What is the article all about. Tommorrow going to ask engineering, medical, law, finance, maths, arts degrees to expire. Mr. Author,to keep pace with technology one needs to upgrade his/her knowledge continuosly and it does not require to have an expiry on education.

Author should first define Ph.D.
by rolladesi on Jan 19, 2008 10:15 AM  Permalink

What is the acronym for Ph.D.? I know of two popular ones amongst Ph.D. candidates: "Pagal Hoke Dekho" in Hindi and "Permanent Head Damage" in English :-)

Jokes apart... before attempting to jump to conclusions, the author should define what or who is a Ph.D. This is the first step in problem solving. First define the problem and then start with the right boundry conditions and assumptions... Now I guess I'm talking like a real Ph.D. :-)

Some people have claimed that Ph.D. is the same as Diploma, Bachelor's and Master's! Can we interpolate that to SSC and HSC?

I don't think this article and this message board deserves a logical analysis to this problem.

Please note Mr Vijay (since his surname is not specifed)has mentioned that he could not ENDURE, and not that he could not READ the entire article. This emphasizes his disgust for the article on PhDs and YOUR INABILITY TO DECIPHER simple paragraphs in english. Food for thought..... don't you say? Have a nice day! :-)
