Foolish.... At the most you must expect some papers to be submitted by the Phds involved in teaching. For others, the respective industry in which they are working will take care of.
After attaining a Ph.D.Degree,one is supposed to be equipped to have a most rational and scientific outlook of the processes and events in general, not restricted to his field of enquiry alone when he was pursuing the Degree. This ability matures with age and sharpens with experience.A doctor in Philosophy is always a doctor. His expiry date is the date he breaths his last.Anyway, the suggestion may work well in some other vocations.

Some of the people do not understand what a 'doctor of philosophy' means... Why not doctor of physics or doctor of maths, etc. If Mr. who posted this can answser this we can take it further - no need to keep answering cries that comes out of a forest... who knows which animal it is that utters the cry!
Had the author got an iota of common sense he would never have aired such comments. It is the height of stupidity that prompted him to suggest an expiry date for PhDs. Spending 5-7 years of life with all those disappointments and occasional jubilations, by the time one gets the degree, he/she realizes that the degree aptly fit the definition of PhD: Doctor of PHILOSOPHY. Though the author%u2019s suggestion on keeping one's research active by continuing with high quality publications sounds good, let me remind him that there are areas where PhDs are employed chiefly for their problem solving skills, ability to work productively with difficult people, innovative ideas etc, rather than their for non-stop publications. And PhDs employed in areas like Science Policy making, editor-level jobs in scientific journals, Administration etc. may not have much opportunity to publish papers due to the nature of their commitments. This, nevertheless taken away the skills one learned during his PhD.
I am a doctor in the US. While it is true that you have to take an exam every 7-10 years depending on the specialty, it is NOT for your license. It is to maintain your board certification.....you can practice even if you are not board certified...because board certification and state license are two different things. In order to maintain your state license you dont have to pass exams but you have to attend a few seminars every year.
I am a PhD too...just having a PhD is not gonna get you anywhere....these days no one cares what your PhD is in....they just ook at your publications and your current research.....recently in our university a PhD full professor ranked faculty got sacked (not fired because he was tenured but he was moved to a small area of the university and pay was reduced to 14% of his original) because he had not published in decent journals in the last 5 yrs. So please dont hop on the bandwagon before you analyze how things are.....PhD doesnt ned an expiry...if you dont do good work...you are just chucked out.
Most ridiculous article of year 2008 on rediff! Nothing more can be said about the stupid thinking of few frustrated men who unfortunately could not excel in their professional life.
Mr. Srinivasa Raghavan, before writing any article you should know the basics. Who is Ram Gopal Agarwal to talk about meaningless things, I think he spoke to you in the corner of a room. I challenge you and your respected Ram Gopal to come for an open challenge and discuss the issue at least with the doctoral students presently pursuing their degrees. Please know the facts before writing any article. If he is an economist let him allow talking about economics but not about other things. Does he know anything about science and technology? It is meaning less to say anything in this page, I am sure Mr. Srinivasa Raghavan and Ram Gopal will read these responses. Come for an open discussion if feel the article is fair. Mr. Raghavan please go back to your journalism basics. If you are not getting any thing to your mind to on this website, select any celebrity and write some stupid stories on them, at least few people will appreciate your stupidity.
