try at the nearest speedpost centre and find out the facility the postal department offers for fresh passport applicants. in my experience that is very pleasant and smooth. that is not for renewal.

Stolen Passport
by Long Island on Sep 15, 2007 01:11 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I had a bitter experience at Brussels, Belgium when my tickets, money and passport were stolen on Friday evening at Railway Station. I had all my passport copies and papers faxed to the consulate so that i can get the duplicate issued on Monday. With great difficulty and lot of push, i could manage to get the passport. The fees was USD 110/- Imagine a person losing all money and now to get the passport had to shell USD 110 ! Anyway, when i landed Mumbai Airport, the immigration officer refused to stamp the passport as he was surprised to see new passport with no visa. Height of Stupidity ! After half an hour later, his superior came and i was allowed to enter my own country.

If they are revamping the system, they should make online and connect all consulates / Regional officers etc so that one would not have to prove all creditentials again and we can feel that we belong to DEVELOPED INDIA , known for its Software knowledge.

I have another interesting tale on Immigration at Bangalore Airport.

T hey just want you to shell out money to them. They very well know that you are desparate and in as odd hours as 0200, you wouldn't go fighting behind them right?

Good article.
by beegeek on Sep 15, 2007 01:10 PM  Permalink

Dear Datta-Ray,
Thanks for the thought-provoking article on Passport pains. After 60 years of independence, it is indeed a shame that the government cannot offer its citizens their 'right' to hold a passport.
What's the problem with our system? What is the solution? Cannot we all work with a conscience?
I guess the 'charity' should begin at the parliament, which is forever adjourned, because the honorable MPs do not know how to discuss with each other without getting excited.
Long live our democracy.

Did you check out the status at http://passport.nic.in/?

I think Rediff should have considered mentioning this URL in the body of the article itself.

I appreciate your efforts to put up in so much details all the requirements of obtaining a passport ( a mammoth task in India)for the benefit of confused and then frustrated seekers of passport (you literally feel like you have won a gold medal in olympics once your passport comes in your hands..yes, you truly have to put in the same amount of effort, dedication, pain, perspiration, and much more to reach the stage of acquiring a passport in India).

Can I request you to also put up guidelines for renewing the passport (incl. expired) or I guess it amounts to acquiring a new one.

Thanks,

Prakash

This is the link you need to read carefully for your query

http://passport.gov.in/cpv/Instructions.htm

Some useful notes :
1: When overseas, try to get renew passport or get additional booklet without changing address in the previous passport. Even dont tell the bugger that you have changed the address in India. Because it is long process if change of address in passport is to be done in overseas.
