by balu sanjay on Sep 15, 2007 11:14 PM  Permalink

10 Years back when the police clearence came for my passport, the head constable asked me this question. Why I have to clear your passport formalities so you can go abroad and earn more money???. Really that feloow was hate filled in knowing that i am going abroad. The next day i wnet to the concerned police inspector and got it cleared in 2 days. Hope things change as we change with the world.

It seems now basic instinct of all of us in India to blame others... open your eyes! seee why it takes long, what is better, suggest good things, rather hanging yourself old tree grouwn by you grand fathers...

Not so screwed as portraied
by vijay S on Sep 15, 2007 09:36 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I had applied for a passport 5-6 years back when things were "in the process of being liberalised". The detective from the police station came twice to my house but could not contact me at all. Finally, when I went to the Police Station thinking that I wll have to pay some bribe to the official, it took only 5 mins the detective to clear my case and that too without any money !!! So I would not brand everyone as corrupt as the author seems to be inferring. We are not as screwed as it has been portraied, there is some hope. I believe India is going to change for the better....Jai Hind...Vijay S

Oh yeah!!

U r the lucky man.

For my new born daughter, I had to Visit India, in middle of the project, just to sign the Paper in front of the concerned officer who did not cleared it even though its written clearly on form, "to be signed by either of parent". Then the Detective came and as my wife was alone at that time, she asked him to wait till she call neighbor. and he just left with out doing inquiry, took another 20 day to get and prepare him to do the inquiry and off-course need to make him "happy" and he still took another 15 days to return the file to head quarter.

Don't agree with Vijay. Maybe there is one honest official for 100 corrupt ones. It is your luck if you manage to get the honest one, but normally fate takes you to the unscrupulous ones.

Passport office
by S Vats on Sep 15, 2007 04:03 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Bangalore is the most efficient place in terms of getting the passport issued, renewed or which ever service one requires. It doesnt take more than3 weeks to get a new passport and the system is really efficient.
But if one compares this system with other places, it is really horrible.
For example Mumbai.. probably 6 months is a cool time..
Similarly the other places like Delhi and Chandigarh also take equal amount of time for issuing a simple document, called passport.
Due to this delay in issuing the passport, the role of middle men, agents begins and they start getting the passports on fraudulent documents. And the story continues.

Beg to disagree with S Vats...Being born and brought up in Mumbai, had applied for my passport personally and not via an agent in Mumbai passport office. Managed to get it in 3 weeks flat. This was way back in 2000 just after my graduation. Other members of my family have also managed to get it in more or less the same time frame. And yes, the police verification was smooth and professional. I am not sure how people can compare performances with other cities for issue of a fresh passport, coz once you get it...its valid for 10years and hence there would be no need to apply for it from any other city...unless the document is lost or damaged.
