fuzzy citizenship
by nadia sani on Jan 17, 2007 11:41 PM  Permalink

Firstly I doubt that there are any political loyalties amongst Indians abroad for the simple reason that few concern themselves with politics even in India, otherwise there would be a radical sweep of politicans brought to account.Secondly double citizenship is common in Europe and Latin America:Italians,Spanish & Portuguese among those who regularly have double citizenship.Italian politics is influenced by Italians outside.Even with double citizenship they can vote in any national election. They even have a regular political party with 2 seats in Italian Parliament! They're loyalties are perhaps worth questioning since in these countries the people themselves can and do influence politics.
Indians in the US are there for economic reasons, politically Indians are NOT active - they are not used to having a bearing on the politics of their country, if they vote in the US they are sure they won't be harassed or beaten and that finally their vote counts.

Citizenship problems
by ravi prakash on Jan 15, 2007 02:43 PM  Permalink

The issue of seeking citizenship has a patriotic fervour although in day to day discourse a citizenship status may mean freedom from deportation under some obscure law in force. The resposibility of the citizen to bear arms in times of war or emergency exists unsaid.
People of Indian origin have enlisted for military service in Iraq, so this is not an issue at all.The question of dual citizenship moves away from the narrow confines of patriotism to one of maintaining ties with the land of birth or liking.
Is the US prepared for it?

Indians' fuzzy outlook on citizenship

I am truly surpised by this article. I feel this article to be overtly imature and far away form the real problems of life.

Has the authour atleast talked to one of the 30,000 people from the UK who are protesting or even know what their demand is.

That my friend is the problem with Indian Media and you are just another part of it !!!

Rediff on the top is another super idiot, of allowing a person who has some knowledge of US Visas to write on the problems of Indians in UK. Not a single BLODDY mention of what HSMP is.

Please do research before writting anything and for god's sake US and UK are two different countries with extermly different histories !!!

Or else you can always keep on writting without research, i think that is what is the first lesson they teach an Indian Journalist. Write with one foot in mouth !!!

I would have appreciated some concrete points to prove that the author has made a mistake, instead of just attacking the article without any explanation. Btw, what are the UK guys actually demanding?

I think the author has made some well laid out points. Counter those with your arguments rather than expletives

Reg: Indians' fuzzy outlook on citizenship
by Jayant Kumar on Jan 11, 2007 12:03 AM  Permalink

The suspicion (and possible hatred) towards Japanese was because they militarily attacked - and hurt US ego big time - and it was also the WW2 period.

Indians started appearing - in big numbers - in 60s...mostly via the F1 route; in the late 80s it was via the H1 route and family sponsorship route. Most consider US as an economically sound place to earn well, save well and enjoy life from a materialistic view point. A large %age of people still have their hearts/minds in in India.

This scenario will get "diluted" over the next 2 generations, like the Italians or Irish, who have no personal touch with anyone in their homelands, but do visit their countries of origin when they can afford to.

So, I think the situation is transitional.
