More People Do not know the Ground reality

Mr Andrew
i think your Company MORE is out of touch with the
Ground reality.
You people open new stores without doing homework or Getting proper feedback.
I want to give an example..

Your comapny is starting a new Store in Mumbai.
Specifically at D M HIGH SCHOOL Daulat Nagar , Borivali east.

Sir Do you know that This particular Area is low lying area and is under 7 foot of flood water Every single year 2005 ,2006 and 2007 .

I hope you store does not get flooded next year ..due to constant flooding in Dahisar river.

Pls always chk out with the locals before starting any new stores ..

It is always like this only in our country dear Mr Denby! Many a times it so happens that it becomes difficult for foreigners to remain unaffected with the crazy yet indigenous spirit we Indians possess. Best of luck and may the best retailer win!!

Making business in India is tough and profitable
by siva subbu on Dec 04, 2007 02:55 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Hey,

I think that Indians are clever enough.

They are price savvy because they know retailers are going to cheat them and they spend more time in markets to ensure the product they buy is of good quality.

There is no one to guarantee the products which we buy. Neither retailer, wholesaler nor the Company.

First ask the companies to gain the trust. Next make business.

Once people trust you guys, half of your job is done and are almost successful.

Regards,
Shiv

Yes, there is no accountability if a product is sub-quality. In US, if you find a sub-standard product you can sue the company for millions of dollars. Here if you find an insect in a packed food, the shopkeeper will simply remove it and ask you to take it.

I agree with Mr Andrew

I 100% agree with Mr Andrew's analysation. And I am surprised to see a foreigner making out such a exact grass root level analysation.Indians bargain a lot just because they are not poor, but its an tendency that they developed during the course of time. And this tendency is not just Indian but I would say its an Asian.Lot of Asian country people have this tendency.I found people bargaining for small electronics to big cars like Benz or BMW(Car dealers in US very well know about it.).One big Asian customer phenomenon is that low cost with hight quality.
This is clearly demonstrated in many ways. For example Nokia sells more phones in Asia(But in US Nokias are not very often seen with People).Another example to quote is about cars.majority of the Asian commnity in US drive either Toyota,Honda,Nissan...some Asian Brand since they believe they are of good reliability.

Secondly, regarding the small road side vendors and kirana stores,I don't see any threat to their business.Because in US in spite of having huge Walmarts and other large retailers, there are tons of small individually owned stores running successfully and making good money. With huge population and difference in mentalities there are customers for every kind of business in India.

s customers will approach the indiviual stores and roadside venors and kirana stores becuase they can get good quality products or they can complaint to them or replace the material or otherwise can enjoy the warranty claim offered by the manufactuers through them.

Further roadside vendors are supplying fully fresh material and they bring the material every day in small quantity.

Considering the above I do not feel that the retail out let make a threat to them. Retial outlet is only a fashion purchase not a qulity and cheapest one.

In short i have been seeing every day that one roadside vendor near to one branded retail shop selling his product in good quantity than the retail shop. I have seen good rush in front of the vendor than the retail shop. So we can very well say Indian women are quality and price concious.

What do you expect from Andrew or for that mater any salesman ? He will always say what you want to hear. I have travelled/dealt with people everywhere, most intelligent consumer are german, americans,Greeks. They go by the adage 'Value for the money'. Some items are priced so high in India. What is the point in discounting/bargaining on already marked up item. Don't get caried away by someone's statement and then plug in your own half baked one track analysis. However such iniatives will ultimately cut down the n-number of middle man where by both producer and consumer will benefit in the long run.

I state contrary: "Indian consumers are INTELLIGENT so that is the reason they are always price savvy and they cannot be befooled"
I am sure that one day all these Big chain of Stores are going to do is "Increase the prices of commodities slowly - giving a slow poison to the consumer's interests. I bet potato will be sold at a minimum price of Rs.25/- per kg by 2012, while at present it is 2Rs.4/- per Kg."
The phenomenon is very simple to be understood, as nobody is considering any consumer benefit. everybody considers their own interest. If the percentage share of total farm products & other commodities increases to the stage forming major stake holders by these so called big Chain of Stores- then Prices are definitely going to InCrEaSe. it is so simple. So best part is boycott in the first phase itself-otherwise there will be more starvation deaths in the country.

Rishi,

Your assumption of upcoming price increases are right, but the reasoning does not seem to reflect the facts.

Prices will probably increase, due to the inflation. But the big corporations only help increase efficiency and help reduce costs compared to smaller stores. Walmart has proven this consistently. Their profits are linked to consumer satisfaction and they will strive to deliver to the best of their ability. We should encourage them to look after their own interest, because their interest does help poor, as it did elsewhere in the world.
