THE DISADVANTAGES OF SHOPPING MALLS IN INDIA
by agnee i on Apr 23, 2007 04:06 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

THE DISADVANTAGES OF SHOPPING MALLS IN INDIA

1)SHOPPING MALLS KILLS ENTERPRENURSHIP. INDIA IS A COUNTRY WITH HUGE POPULATION WITH MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WITHOUT JOBS MOST OF THESE PEOPLE END UP DOING BUSINESS AND THESE BUSINESS ARE IN SMALL SCALE.THE ENTRY OF WALL MART WILL DISTROY THE BUSINESS OF MANY RETAILERS ACROSS INDIA
WHICH WILL CREATE AN IMBALANCE AND JOBLESSNESS.

2)ALL MALLS ARE AIRCONDITIONED WITH THE NEED FOR POWER EVER INCREASING IN THE CITIES MANY PEOPLE WILL HAVE TO GO POWERLESSFOR MULTIPLE HOURS

3) THE THREAT OF TERRORISM IS ANOTHER MAJOR CONCERN IN MALLS PEOPLE GO IN EXPECTING MAJOR DISCOUNT.BUT DOES ANY ONE THINK HOW SOFT TARGET THESE MALLS ARE ESPECIALLY WITH TERRORISM IN CITIES MALLS WILL BE AGAIN A SOFT AND VULNARABLE TARGET.SO SCATTERED BUSINESSES ARE ALWAYS GOOD.

4)MALLS PROVIDE DISCOUNTS ONLY AT CERTAIN TIMES,PEOPLE SHOULD REMEMBER NO BUSINESS CAN RUN WITHOUT PROFITS.SO PEOPLE GETTING HUGE DISCOUNTS ARE ONLY A EYE WASH***ORGANISED EYE WASH.WISE MEN WILL COME TO KNOW ABOUT THIS QUICKLY

Wall Mart should not be allowed in India
by gautam roy on Apr 23, 2007 04:02 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Licence to allow Wall Mart to operate in India depends how much of indian produced items wall mart uses, if it benifits Indian producer then only allow. Item wise or percentage wise to be judged. Wall Mart not be allowed as sales outlet of Chineese or Mexican product in India.

How real is this threat?
by Ashutosh on Apr 23, 2007 03:48 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

These scare tactics are beyond my comprehension. We are worried that entry of Walmart would affect small retailers half way across the world Americans are scared that Indians would take away all their jobs. How much truth there is behind these claims is difficult to quantify. But I believe that globalization can do a lot of good to everybody. Imagine what life would have been had we been still driving Fiat padmini or only MTNL phone lines. The point is that globalization helps competition to thrive and end users are the ultimate beneficiaries.

Besides, Reliance retail has pledged to make its retail stores a low cost destination and if Walmart does not follow that lead, they would have to pack and go.

For the last 50 years the government has done a lot of damage to the economy in the name of protection. Now we realize that socialism was not the best of the choices.

Let Wal Mart come and see how people adapt themselves to the new environment and I believe retail stores would find a way around this threat. By consolidation........perhaps......

Mr.Ashutosh, please remember that MTNL and BSNL are still offering cheap services and also in rural areas where private operators do not go. also note the exorbitant and excess billing resorted and complaints from public in courts on PVT telecom operators. My experience with them is worst. They charge for calls not made and claim it as data usage though no usage take place. I have filed a case against Reliance Mobile in court now

bsnl should have brought mobile network into india 10 years before the private players came. they put india behind by several years, same with DSL technology.

remember we had to maintain a ratio card for milk.

Globalization in india was started by narshima roa now please tell it is almost 10 years now
can you tell me are you getting goods cheaper than what you were getting 10 years back my dear friend cost of land commodities fruits vegitable all are shooting up what are you getting cheaper now is gizmos which are not manufactured in india (china)
my dear friend so at micro level I can tell you this will be very bad to shop owners
Our politician should think in india main Occupation was agriculture becoz we had all those resources but now we will have to purchase every thing from other countries becoz our small farmers are bankrupt by using fertizer from AMERICA which are landed as credit loan to farmers

Why Wal Mart should not enter India
by Ramakrishnan Iyer on Apr 23, 2007 03:48 PM  Permalink

Whatever you can say against Wal Mart can be said with equal justification against other local players like Reliance. Those who are against Wal Mart are anti-American in their thinking and they only pay lip service to the interests of local farmers and traders.

There will be huge job losses in the unorganised sector when big retail chains start operating in India. That kind of massive shift in employment has to be anticipated and provided for.

You cannot stop or stall centralised sourcing of products in bulk, for a long time.

Those who are against large retail chains were also against computerization in banking a while ago. Technology can only be stalled for a while. It cannot be stopped. Wisdom consists in dealing with the after-effects of technological change and not in blindly opposing it.

WallMart's entry into India
by Shridhar Iyer on Apr 23, 2007 03:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I personally feel that

1) Wall Mart's entry will give more options to the buying public. For example, I may like to buy a Chinese Wrist Watch at around Rs.300/- instead of a Titan for Rs.3000/=

2) It might force existing Big Baazrs, Super Bazars, and other Malls to be better in quality, price, and services.

3) The middlemen might be reduced, as Wall Mart will get things direct from Manufacturers, which will help the people to get better quality products at better prices.

4) Indian manufacturers will have to be better in quality and price if they want their goods to be sold in Wall-Mart.

5) Our Retailers don't pay well and treat employees well, either. Therefore we may not have any grudge on this aspect too!

6) The author has quoted about Sri Lankans, and Bangaladesh Tea to be sold by Wall-Mart in India. If it is better in quality and price, than Indian made tea, there is no harm in buying them. This will, in the long run, force the Indian manufacturers also to improve quality and price.

Therefore I dont think there is any harm in welcoming Wall-Mart in India.

With best wishes,

V.Srinivasan.

Dear Suvi,

I brought some made in Chinese watches when I came from abroad. The average price is around 5 dollars, i.e. Rs.250/= All are doing well even after 1 year. You use them for a couple of years, and you can buy yet another latest model, whereas if you go to a Titan show room, the prices are intimidating. Your friends Chinese watch may be an exception!

Thank u,
Srinivasan.

Titanwalla make more money in your purchase. Probably his manufacturing cost too is Rs200/- only. He can replace and talk nicely and for 10 times.

There is a possibility of India becoming Consumer market instead of Producer Market, which is not good for any country. They are good only when they source maximum goods from the domestic manufacturer/ market.

Dear Kamal,

Some one will buy from you only if your products are good in quality, and price. Otherwise nobody will buy from you. Therefore our Indian manufacturers will be forced to improve quality and price, which is good for the country. We, as the consumers, will also get good quality 'made in India' goods, if not immediately, may be in the years to come.

With best wishes,
V.Srinivasan.

Wall Mart should not be allowed in India
by rishikesh sinha on Apr 23, 2007 03:38 PM  Permalink

Hi all,
Just wanted to drag yr attention toward one small fact :

A Developed Country like Canada, who has alll the similarities with US, has only one Wall Mart Outlet.... They have not allowed Wall Mart to prosper there...

If u say, that Wall Mart didn't try there.. Then, It would be wrong...

So India, s developing courty has to consider all aspects before allowing Wall mart in India....
