IT revolution
by ram on Apr 23, 2007 10:36 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The IT revolution has made other professions seem like worthless.
Its just mind blowing- what these people did for the country. But I am terribly jealous since I am in the two letter golden letters- IT.

My only concern is the lack of job opportunities and educational facilities in other hardcore engineering fields. Punching in the IF and DO loops can bring in money.. but whats the point of there is No civil engineer to build roads and bridges, electrical engineer to build control panels for INfosys buildings,No chemical engineer to produce gasoline and power your Mercs. More importantly- lack of motivation for iinovative research and development. We are happy to just work with DO and IF loops..I do not see a single sign of R&D in this IT revolution.

This narrow sided progress is scary.

Today, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical and other engineers are getting jobs and a better pay-check because of IT. Not just engineers, vegetable vendors and shop-keepers are getting a better deal because of IT today.

Every era has a driving force in economy. In the current era, the driving force happens to be IT. 20 years back it was someting else, 20 years from now it could be something else.

The narrow-sided progress is scary. All brains are headed towards IT and very few towards pure-science or other branches of engg or economics. But India has a huge pool of talent (and population) and can absorb some of its brains being IF-DO coolies.

However, I really wish rich companies like Infosys spend some money on R&D and come up with some patents and a product for Gods sake, instead of being 101% coolie-company.

take care of hosur road, then you can guide indian IT
by raghu bear on Apr 23, 2007 12:39 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Let Infosys first take care of Hosur Road from
Electronic City to Bangalore. Then let them
think of leading the Indian IT sector.

It's really heart-tearing to see human beings
commuting like dead bodies in Hosur Road for
the sake of rat race.

Pathetic.

Forget about corporate governance. You can't
shrug away social responsibility.

tomorow U will ask for bangalore-mysore highway also to be developed by infy, what the hell we IT profesionals paying incometax for? let the government/NHAI come forward and finish the job,
social responsibility is not corporate's job it's up to individual to follow LANE system and trafic rules rather than push like Bunch of cows moving on the road.

You ought to give effort its due. The Silk board - Elec City road runs smoother than its ever been, despite the construction activity all along it. Let's not generally take pot shots at all thats big and powerful and be objective in our praise and criticism.
In fact, overall, Bangalore is a lot better roads-wise than it was 6 months ago. Am beginning to be hopeful again.

Yeah right. Infosys should also repair roads, build dams, buid an airport in Mysore and ply BTS busses on time, provide drinking water to all Bangaloreans, solve poverty and world-hunger.

Dhobi Ghat
by Ravalnath Shende on Apr 23, 2007 12:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Dear Mr. Kris,

Infy is successful but the success is that of a successful DHOBI. Washing clothes for MNC clients. We would love to see Infy become Microsoft / Google / Yahoo and have own products to sell and not just remain a jobworker. All the best.

Ravalnath - Services is the key to Infosys success and its best in doing what it does. I see no reason why Infosys should do product development . Product development is about ideas which come out of creative genius of one man or many men together who think alike but complement each other. Infosys has done well with Services and process and its philosophy is to not have too many geniusses - basically folks who are hard working and not very ambitious. The chaps who will not rock the boat. Product development is about disruption. Its about challenging existing paradigms. Its about one man's passion to change the world.

If all companies go for building their own products, who will do the Services. Infy is a services based company not product based.

Don't know the difference between a DHOBI and IT Services???

Anonymous - Its not about building a product, its about the attitude and the will to do creative work, which Infy does not possess

Do you think providing services doesnt have any creative Work? Providing services and Building a product both needs creativity and innovativeness.

I don't think we can model our companies based on products as we have very few PhDs in
basic sciences and engineering. We can do service model by luring people with money and career prospects but can't ignite people's mind towards creativity as that has to come out of a passion. Now it is the onus of engineers like you and me to make india a top class outsourcing destination and hope our offsprings to be in grown economy so that they can be more innovative.I always have a great respect towards infosys though i heard comments from people like you within infosys.

Mr. Ram, then why are you still sticking to Infosys? you always have the option of moving out, why dont u follow that. dont forget that at the end of the month, u draw infy salary, whatever it might be. n if u r so discontented with infy, leave na. I am very sure, infy will not have even remote negative impact bcoz of your leaving, rather they will be happy to have such people leaving this organization. Surely u r saying this bcoz u have not been working in any other organization. Think b4 u say.

Anu,

why does infy comes up with approach like yours.. If you dont like it, then leave it. Thats an approach which can ensure sure death of the corporation. Infy is still a kid in corporate sector and with such approach, it will die sooner than others.

as a good company, you should listen to employees and come up with resolutions and ideas to make the employee feel better..

Infy is a services company (producing coolies, dhobis etc etc) so what is baffling is not that they dont have a product but the reluctance to every try!!

Nilekani said in one of his interviews that in Indian dynamics, it is not possible to plan-fund-develop-manufacture-validate-market a product!

Maybe Infy should TRY to fund-develop-manufacture-validate-market ONE product.
