It is the need of the time that the airports should be modernized, but, I would go with the striking employees saying that this task should be handed over to AAI. Fingers have been raised upon politicians for privatising government units their way, but it should be stopped now. Is AAI not capable of handling it? And if not close it? And these guys should privatise Police, CBI, etc. first... for the benefit of citizens of India.
Do you like food served by server who doesnt care about the peoples need instead throws dish at you and doesnt like to listen as if he is the boss or a server who politely asks \"What is your need sir\" and serve you.
By privatization one has the option to choose any type of service he wants. Having monopoly in airports by AAI will lead sufferings for air traveler if service is not good. Even then he is left with no option.
I dont say all private players are efficient but we have choice.
AAI, who claims that if they are given an opportunity they will make it more modern. But they have not thought of one thing. It doesnt need money at all .It is the willingness to work for people. It is the care they show to traveler that does not need $billions of dollar but a simple simile and \"How can I help you not for job sake but with personal touch.
It cant happen even if you give $billions . One more thing is Profit.
AAI claims that they have 120 airport that needs fund from the profit of metro airports. It is the clear lack of their planning that has to be blamed for this.
Each airport can be funded in a JV with support from local people/company/government and then
India seems to be a few years behind in taking this step towards privatisation. It is a step forward as it is really pathetic to see the condition of some of the key airports in India, a classic eg being the Bangalore airport. One, the current airport doesnot have the capacity to control the current air traffic, and two the international airport that was supposed have come up has become a joke. Privatisation will ensure better services, cleaner airports and importantly as in all other sector which have been provatised, customer will be the king. Left parties cries, and the labor unions cries of employees loosing jobs is unfound as all currently employed personnel at airport are skilled and trained and no private organisation in its senses will fire skilled man-power. Also as there is a desperate need to expand and may be build new airports, the number of available jobs will obviously not come down but go up. Only thing which will happen is, people will have to start working harder as privatisation autamatically demands performance. The left parties will have their lame egos hurt, and thier control on the functioning of the airports via the labor unions reduced.
If the airport authority of india is capable of doing it(Airport Modernisation) on their own and raise the required resources there s no harm in giving them the go ahead. They had even submitted an alternate plan and it should have been given some thought. As seen in some news report both these metro airports contribute nearly 50% of revenue to the AAI so it would have been better if they had not been privatised....instead all the smaller airports and all greenfield airports can be privatised.

Forget the airports, I think the whole government itself should be privatized.
I have been, many times, through atleast 7 different countries spread over 3 continents in the last 3 to 4 years.. and trust me, nothing compares to the 'state' of the Indian Airports. I am not trying to be a harsh unpatriotic moron here, but sometimes, words can be taken as constructive criticism. But unfortunately, in India, the words dont mean anything anyway!!!
Its that state of living by the AAI employees where laxity and laid back attitude becomes a part of life. This grooms from a habit in government employees to this stature. Instead of having billions of rupees with them, the modernisation of airports always took a back seat because of the attitude 'we will do it' Now when its time that the government has taken a constructive step towards modernisation of airports to give a feel and look of international standards AAI employees have woken up from their slumber and got agitated. Its a very very competitive environment and let all employees who work survive else they would perish and their employment be snatched off.
I hated the day when I was flying from mumbai to nagpur and my flight was delayed by one hour due to congestion at Mumbai Airport. I believe privatisation should bring efficiency and better facilities at our airports. I 110 % support privatisation.
