One should make infrastructure and then think that city will grow rather than thinking to make infrastructure after city grows. The writer ignores the fact that each city is growing and if metro is running at less capacity now then its quite a good thing that there is space for more.
Delhi Metro is yet to reach satellite town like Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurgaon. I think a lots of commuters happen to travel either from Delhi to these towns or vice versa. So these commuters still lack this facility. Delhi metro should devise a plan to connect Delhi to these towns as soon as possible(not leave it till 2010) and also a cooridoor which can connect these town through Delhi. Considering upcomming towns like greater noida, plan should include connection to these kind of developing towns. Also Delhi metro must study, in which area the real estate development is going on and what will be the the impact on surface transport in those area for example indirapuram in ghaziabab which is very close to Noida and Delhi itself.
Well, Boeing 777 cannot ply on Delhi roads and if the traffic were smooth and hassle free, why would there be need for anything other than a Tonga.
It is because the roads cannot handle the traffic that alternate forms of transport are needed. If the high capacity buses are not going to ply on congested roads and instead on air then, it is a different issue.

It is a well compiled article. It might appear that the author is against the Metro but on deeper reading, the article emphasizes on multiple forms of transport and the threat to their development due to the big project value of metro.
the delhi metro project is an achievement of engineering and political will. The sucess of this project impacts the rest of the country like no other.finally mumbai too is getting one and i'm happy 2 see someone caring for the commuters. Some ppl cannot see gud newhere, thats y articles like this creep up.
The transportation system in a city like Delhi has to be a mix of all the alternates. We cannot afford to discard or disrepute any alternate on the basis of initial economics. And indeed the social angel has has also to be looked upon. I have travelled couple of times on the Metro and have noticed the sense of pride on the faces of the commuters. This has also helped Delhi commuters in becoming more disciplined and organized. Not a single incident of Vandalization has been reported. Then there opportunities for developing engineering expertise and to my knowledge the metro station at Raja Garden which is one of the highest point stands testimony to this. India should not tend to talk about the measly third world countries rather it should march forward with all the energy to show that we can do it better in all aspects.
Extremely typical of the current media to look at negatives in everything. The author musr NEVER have travlled in Delhi on a bus ( let alone on foot) if he thinks buses would solve the problem. They might be "trying" the bus corridor in Brazil, but the world over metro has been more succesful than buses. Also the author is extremely unaware of modern London if he thinks that there is a Central Business District in London. There are more than one center's now, the financial district or banking district has a new neighbour in Canary wharf and traffic on the London underground is in all directions and not one way.
well, its a basic right of writer to write such words...but think about delhi 15 or 20 years from now..high rise buildings conjusted roads...bigger population. Its an investment for tomorrow, at cost of today.
Remember it's the best gift a delhite can give to his.her future generations. We should also go for feeder systems like high capacity buses or monorail in various part of the city but the life line of delhi should be shining delhi metro.
Anyone who says Metro is a mistake is simply looking for publicity by giving a negative opinon about something positive. Have we even considered the benifits of the metro in the long run 1. Pollution will come down substantially. 2. low pollution low cases of medical problems caused by Pollution. 3. Lower cases of health problems Goverment saves on health expenditure 4. Govt. can utilise the fund somehwere else. 5. Lower traffic on the road causes less tension while driving 6. Lesser cases of Road rage and accidents on road. 7. Again saving on health expenditure caused due to accidents. 8. Saving on Road maintinence costs in the long run as more people learn to use the metro. 9. Loyalty towards the City rises with better facilites as the metro. 10. Good Infrastructure always means good Investment in the country. Its an Overall saving. Why are we even discussing its a costly mistake and tell me by having planes as the writer starts with will you get to go to office in it everyday. I dont even want to know who wrote this silly article.
I am just wondering where was the idea when the metro system was conceptualised...In India...why do people bring up thousand issue when they know that time has already past when they could be put to use or someone whould have given them a thought.....Well....I don't think we have given metro rail enough time to show what it's real potential is....even new small factories set up take 3-5 years and Man, this is METRO rail.......you will know Some of points mentioned in the article are wrong itself if some have been to London or NY
