whay this story is on rediffmail, what the hell is this? waht it means? what writer wants to say? it's rite that is shows how much our culture is good but here no sense of this stort
Very touching information. variety of arts, crafts, architecture, festivals, religiou ashrams....but we (our Govt bodies)need to improve conditions for lodging and boarding and services for foreign students/visitors atleast to attract more & more of them. Corruption and matrelism are world wide phenomena. Why single out India
our indian culture is great,it is 'VASUDEVAKUDUMBAKOM',Hindu culture consider all living beings including human beings are brothers and sisters, our culture will not allow us to call other citizens foreigners, there is no language, culture or cast barriers, there is no swadesi or videsi concept in our thought,we have an international out look. All in one and one in all that is our motto.

Dear Ramankutty, well said but what you said is only in text books not in practice,my question is then why are you calling SONIA videsi if your culture will not allow you to call others foreigners? If all in one and one in all is your motto then why dont you see this oneness in your christian and muslim brothers? My opinion regarding this is you better teach this to your BJP/VHP and RSS leaders? Sorry Raman kutty, you are a good person,so never go and teach this to BJP/RSS and VHP leaders I am sure they will never let you see the next sun rise.

Raman kutty, you are very innocent fellow,if all hindus are like you then this nation will become Heaven.
Real India lives in villages.Be there and you would find everything non materialistic and simple people who have limited money but are most contended and full of life.Difficulties are everywhere.Lets see the brighter side of life.India is a young and vibrant nation and it is in our hands to make or break our country. It is so satisfying to see young Indians on the move contributing thru their efforts.Iam sure that in times to come we will be nation to remember.Let us not ape west.Pick up their good values and mingle it in our culture. It is the time when world is looking at us.We have all the capability to the next super power.Reverse brain drain has already started.Let us be united and let us not entertain any harmful activities which weakens our nation. Jaideep
Sorry to say this Indians are materialistic however they try to deny. Think dowry!! Number two why blame/trash US? Americans have never attacked or colonized India. In fact all the development that has occurred in India after the IT revolution is attributed to companies in US. I have seen shootings in India also. I grew up in Bombay and there was plenty of violence around. Most people who post comments here are from sheltered middle class families who comprise only 20% of Indian population. The rest live in poverty for whom no other Indians care.

Mumbai is wonderful city. People care more for buffaloes than humans. When buffaloes are transported in trucks there was lot of uproar on ill treatment metted to buffaloes. But no one cares for humans who travel in local trains much worse than the condition the buffaloes are transported.
You could see some interesting observations, one, this laid back mentality would be the secret for creativity, and what is real security and comfort, is it in the minds of the people or with the physical environment, and above all why do we run for, when we run for? which is safer, having a gun, or having no enemies? I think we Indian have a lot to teach this world, and we also have something to learn from but we should definitely be choosy, we are now picking up the wrong things, like being punctual etc., shall we take this forward in this direction?

Looks like YOU are the one who behaves like a "moronic herd" and do not have any independent thinking!!! Get out of this forum!!!
Thank You Mrs Ruby Banerjea & Ms. Sreoshy, Truly if you are looking for materialistic pleasures, India is not a place to be. but if you want to get love, affection, satisfaction, sprituality, then i think india is a best place to be...

i read your comments and couldn't agree more man. so spot on. when will us Indians stop trying to pretend that we have the best culture in the world. Unless of course by culture we mean corruption, inadequate life style, psycophant mentality, red-tapism, castism and all the other evils, integral part of our society.

tis is india dude... your concern is of no use... this all will continue for ever.. one or two ppl cant ever change all this..... regards

why can't we, one or two, bring the change? as far as i can see, our younger generation is brimming with ideas to break the shackles that have long kept hold on our society. Let's be strong, rational and not sentimental to get rid of all the negatives plaguing our society.
Sometimes I feel that this attitude that "I alone can't change anything so I may as well become part of the crowd" is the biggest difference between developed and developing societies.

Well Mr. Jaichand I dont know yor true name but seems like you got some problem with india. All the faults you are trying show exist in every country in more or less amount (Noplace is haven). In fact crimes like sireal killer and sexual slevary are more hidiouse in western country.Point is inspite of these problems indian culture gives you hope and motivation to be positive (We dont go on depression therapy immidiately).I know things are not very delighting but they are much better then imidiatly after independence. There are anti social elements (like you) and out side forces that trying to destebalise this country but it is only culture of this country which has given strength to stand that pressure and keep working for progress of every one.

you are so cluelss. Jaichand hit the nail right in the head. When will we Indians leave this attitude of being better spiritually than the world when indeed we have one of the most stratafied, corrupt, uneducated and poor society. I mean visible doesn't need evidence. can't you see that our complacent attitude has cost us so much when in reality we could have been lot better had we risen to the challenge instead of being complacent and inactive.
Talking about depression, the definition of depression itself is different in both the countries. A small psychological problem which we Indians wouldn't even notice could be counted as depression. And it is far better to recognize the problem and fix it than not recognizing it and pretending that there is no problem. In the long term, the earlier approach far outperforms the other one.
Smell the coffee. It is good to be satisfied but bad to be ignorant and oblivious to the better things in life and world.

What love and affection you are talking about? Why any body sends their daughter to India where women has been raped every minute, people are fighting with each other on religious basis, where God's man are caught ith pronographic CDs, go to public offices where bribe is asked as a fundamental right,Have you ever visited Sales Tax Office in Delhi, where an officer was caught red handed but reinstated because they went on strike together, a bunch of corrupt people can take the political leadership to ransom. What Politicians are doing, dividing people , hindu, muslim, Jat, Gujjar, Rajput, for their vote bank

though i agree with your ideas as shown in the other comments, this comment is way over the line. For whatever's sake, please stop degrading India like this. If we, the rationals and progressives, start to adopt that attitude, there is no hope.

you are missing the point. you are comparing the lifestyle of an average person in India to that of a criminal in other countries. Jaichand is comparing lifestyle of an average man and he sure has a point.
there are more serious problems in this country than an american indian studnts problems which will be lasting a few months. rediff, please take up more serious problems concerning the country & the people living within. there are several optiona available to american indians to make themselves comfortable
