A person should atleast gain some experience in the corporate world before starting his own venture. This will give him an oppurtunity to understand the roots of a business and will thus enhance his confidence in startin his own business

Being an entrepreneur is no child's play
by Deepak Khanna on Jan 29, 2007 05:20 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

People do talk about being an entrepreneur and starting own ventures. But let me tell you, its not a child's play. One needs to have nerves of steel to do that and if you don't have that, its always better to go for a job. Moreover the sort of salaries which an MBA gets these days is quite high and you can't expect to match such pay from being an entrepreneur in the initial several years of starting your own venture. If you have a lot of financial commitments, and responsibilities you should better go for a top job rather than being an entrepreneur. If however you have a supportive family and a sound family financial background which you can know can support you in case you fail, only then should think about starting own business. In my opinion more then financial reasons, it depends really on the mind of the person, those like me who think they just can't stand a boss and want to be their own boss should only go for own business. But if you think you are going to make more money than a top job at a corporate think again, even if that happens it will take several years to achieve that stage.

I agree with you Deepak 100%.
entrepreneurship and being your own boss looks & sounds very glamourous but it requires lot of self belief and will to persist to be successful.

Which direction do you wanna grow?
by Kaushal Karkhanis on Jan 29, 2007 05:16 PM  Permalink

Great question - something I'm currently grappling with myself. It's a tough choice and i'm leaning towards going solo but the offers keep coming through the roof - almost like the devil trying to lure you! To me it's the learning curve that comes with entrepreneurship.

Growing deeper vertically is great, but growing horizontally doesn't happen as much when you specialize - and that's what I'm looking for atm. With an insurance of three dozen job options - it's not a bad idea to make the jump I think!

Its a personal choice
by bhuru rai on Jan 29, 2007 05:09 PM  Permalink

It depends on the mentality of the person, but I think starting young is always an advantage, even a failed entrepreneour will have valuable experience and if one beleives he/she can't go on they can always get a good job because the economy will continue to provide a lot of opportunities.
