Well Mr. Pankaj... I have a suggestion for you. If you remember that you had not given any of your bank account information in the application, then you can surely use the credit card. As mentioned by another rediff user, an average american has atleast 2-3 credit cards and using credit card is mandatory here to build credit history. But even here in US, we have to pay the money before due date. So likewise... go for the credit card. Use it. Then pay the due before due date. Dont make late payments. Then no goondas would be at your door.

Goonda ICICI bank.
by Katta Ramakrishna on Feb 05, 2007 03:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I have experienced this with the ICICI Goooonda bank! I opted for help of police too. They are lazy and not interested to file a case and tried to threaten me. Police too have links with the goonda ICICI bank. We all should form as a team and fight against them.
Or work to change the system by changing the politics to get good governance.

On the other hand!
by Chaitra Kamath on Feb 05, 2007 02:23 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

If one person borrows cash its imperative that it has to be returned. There are many customers who make a transaction and simply dont return the cash. I have 2 credit cards for close to 8 years now and many times i have carried forward t balance by paying just the minimum due. Both banks havent resorted to such methods yet (touchwood!) Its very much possible that banks would have sent the goonda after sending legal notices which the customer would have happily ignored or shifted their residence/place of work. Because of such 'fly by night' customers the credit card risks are high and genuine repayers like me have to cough out 3% p.m (thas 42% p.a) to cover their follies. Damn you malpracticing customers!

I completely agree with Ms.Chaitra, i've been using credit cards from 3 different banks since the last 6 years and have never faced any kind of probelm as in the illustration. Its while applying for the card its your duty to go through the terms and conditions and only if satisfied, then sign the application. And every layman knows that the billing happens once a month, is it such impossible task to keep check of the statements on time, if you have not received then any bank is just a call away or a few clicks away. The entire fun of using a credit card will be lost by customers like amit.

must be HDFC Bank Credit Card
by Ajay Sharma on Feb 05, 2007 02:16 PM  Permalink

I had the same experience with HDFC Bank , where they auto-debited my savings account. They made promises of free gifts etc etc , they gave nothing to me except hefty fees. Now my advice to anyone dealing with HDFC = DONT !

law
by tarun rana on Feb 05, 2007 01:41 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I think there was a law passed by rbi a few months back which made sending hooligans to peoples houses illegal.
If such a thing has happened recently you can approach authorities for redressal irrespective of whether the dues were genuine or not

Are you sure that you haven't signed for auto debit? If you have an account with the bank and you don't make clear instructions, they will auto credit minimum amout due. THat's the small print. When agent came home and asked me to sign allover the form I asked him to leave it and collect it next day. He finally did did that reluctantly and even grumbled that I hadn't opted for any bill pay which they said is mandatory. THis way I had enough time to go through the fine prints overnight and decide what I wanted to do. I have not faced any problems so far.

hi Giri kumar
It was wise on your part to have done that. But if you see the way a credit card is sold it seems they are obliged to us. we usually dont go through the fine print. Even after goin throug the fine print you never know the services a bank will offer interms of good customer care and people who will abide by the RBI guidelines of how a credit card business should be run. Its a huge banking system and you have to do wat they say in case of a dispute of pay a heavy penalty as there is nothing in control of you. here i am talking of exceptional cases where somebody defaults on a payment due to fault of the bank.

Suhel

The ICICI goonda bank is spearheading the use of threat as a means of recovery. It is time someone gets an arrest warrant against the bank's CEO too for this tyoe of offence.

Yet again, it is ICICI Bank
by Ramesh on Feb 05, 2007 12:52 PM  Permalink

Going through the article and logically tracing from the phone-banking centres located in Hyderabad and Mumbai, it is evident that the bank in question is ICICI Bank. Yet again, it proves that ICICI Bank is a third-rate bank who have expanded too fast in the retail banking sphere without putting their back-end processes in place. K V Kamath needs to be reprimanded for this mindless and deficient services.

Horrible service from Credit card customer care help line
by Suresh Mathew on Feb 05, 2007 12:38 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The people sitting behind customer care centeres have either no training or simply care less. I had a nightmarish excperience when I took a credit card personal loan from a High tech bank that never sleeps .One day I found that my loan for 16% interest is forclosed and charged at a credit card rate of 36 %. At least 10 times I contacted the help line but they will politely say they will look into the matter. Finally I had to contact the head of customer care to sort it out.Beware friends when you take a credit card loan .

It reminds me of a situation wherein I faced a similar problem with a cell phone bill which I could not pay since I had to leave the country on an urgent business visit. Neverthless, the cellphone connection company refused to deduct it from the deposit and harassed my parents

I want to cancel my credit cards now and be free from unwanted nuisance that treats you like a criminal even before ascertaining the reality. I dont want to interact with hooligans for saving few hundred rupees a year. I would prefer paying cash rather than feed these hooligan banks and their fraternity my hard earned money as interest! Good article! keep up the democracy and right to righteous expression!

My question would be, how do these people get our mobile and office extensions to offer Credit cards? I plan to sue these banks and also the mobile service provider for the nuisance.

no bank mentions that they will send a collection agent. just ask for the id with the collection agaent and he will show an id of authorisation. call the police and report that the bank has engaged a collection agent and he is threatening you. the fellow will just vanish into thin air because it is forbidden in law to use collection agents to recover civil dues. credit . credit card dues are civil liabilities and they can proceed legally against you only as a civil case . it is not a criminal offence. never get a credit card payment cheque bounced. that will be used by the bank to proceed against you criminally. as long as there is no cheque bouncing , they have no locus standi to threaten you or proceed against you as a criminial case. satish vaidiyanathan
