Are degrees worth more than work experience?
by Sangeetha on Oct 30, 2006 10:20 PM  Permalink

I personally feel that the most important quality for a person to shine, is their smartness to make use of the available resources to the utmost ability.

Feel not for not being able to get right education or your dream job.

I have seen people with lots of alphabets listed behind their names as their qualification (not to ignore the fact that it takes a lot of hardwork and perseverance behind that), but that just gives you the entry.

Its then your approach towards life, on what you want to do or where you want to be, thats going to define your Success/Growth.

Degrees or work experience?
by Krishna Kishore on Oct 30, 2006 10:04 PM  Permalink

Theory and practical experience would always go together and very few extraordinary people achieve excellence with a single weapon.

Education teaches a human about how he/she would need to channelize the thinking process. Afterall, the education system is built upon the combination of practical experience and scientific research done by the authors. But, one after gaining theoritical knowledge and not putting it into practice is like having the raw food in hand and not cooking it! The raw food has no taste and very tough to digest.

Apart from this, very few people in the world like Dhirubhai, Bill gates(College Drop-out)has a great knack at visualising the future world and they were truly inspired by their vision and here also, having a vision is theory and if they did not have put that into practice those ideas would have gone into the drain. We would not see a Microsoft or a Reliance!

So, one should strive for excellence in both education as well as putting that into practicality. That would be a phenominal achievement both for the self and the society around and it will ignite millions and billions of people who would require an inspiration or an example.

Work experience!
by Sachin on Oct 30, 2006 09:42 PM  Permalink

I believe work experience is the way forward as I learnt trick of my trade through work excperience only rather than Univ degrees. I an IT consultant working with one of the major telecom companies in world for the last five years in Europe. I did my bachelors in Commerce, but that didn't stop graduate trainees from Engineering streams working under. I think my key was my confidence, communication skills, and ability to get on with the people, which helped me grow in my profession.
Unfortunately lot of my countrymen need to work on their soft skills, which I believe is the key to the success in the professional life.
However I'm not saying that degrees are not important but employers in India should also spend some time in upgarding the soft skills and instilling confidence in their employees.

work experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by vishi on Oct 30, 2006 08:37 PM  Permalink

Hi,

I am in favour of experienceb, coz what we learn in our practical life ,books can never taught us those experience.

I know a person who is successful just bcoz of his experience. He is no other person ...he is m husband. and I m one of his great follower. My husband has only BCAdegree from such an small institute. He completed his graduation in his late 20 and he started working at that time Now he is 26 and he has work experience of 6 great yrs.in those 6 yrs he learned so man things He worked with professional acess,- citi group-wipro and last but not least Morgan Stanley (new york)which can be dream of an one.Now he is well placed in India with post of vice president which is very very tough to achieve in such a young ageit can be dream of an IITan or IIM valas but I am proud to say that my husband dont have such a big degree but he has 6 great yrs in his 26.but one thing I would like to say is success depends upon ur knowledge ..u can be successful with or without books .
U should have presence of mind ,and power to grab the things. Stunning personality make all those things possible.

Practical theories arare always more useful than those bookish theories.

Are degrees worth more than work experience?
by Madhav Nadkarni on Oct 30, 2006 08:37 PM  Permalink

If I say "Let us close all schools and colleges" because Dhirubhai Ambani did not have an degree, Indira Gandhi did not have any degree, and so on. How would you react? I think to arrive to such conclusion based on success of few gifted individuals is not correct. I feel, even Dhirubhai Ambani, Indira Gandhi would not agree to such idea. Roll of formal education and experience should not be mixed. Both the personalities were instrumental in promoting formal education.

Are degrees worth more than work experience?

Only if the degree is from a reputed institute like IIT's, IIM's it matters. Otherwise as always the degree is at least 5 to 10 years behind in terms of the technology being actually used.
