I believe work experience is the way forward as I learnt trick of my trade through work excperience only rather than Univ degrees. I an IT consultant working with one of the major telecom companies in world for the last five years in Europe. I did my bachelors in Commerce, but that didn't stop graduate trainees from Engineering streams working under. I think my key was my confidence, communication skills, and ability to get on with the people, which helped me grow in my profession. Unfortunately lot of my countrymen need to work on their soft skills, which I believe is the key to the success in the professional life. However I'm not saying that degrees are not important but employers in India should also spend some time in upgarding the soft skills and instilling confidence in their employees.
