Degrees or work experience
by Mallik on Oct 31, 2006 11:34 AM  Permalink

I only vote for the work experience than degrees which contributes more for anybody's success in life.

I am a graduate with 12-13 yrs. experience in HR & Admn. and also Secretarial field and have been working with higher officials like CMDs, Directors, OSDs etc. which helped in gaining lot of managerial skills with very good RATHER EXCELLENT command on spoken & written English which really even MBAs, Engineers, PHDs or other post graduates (of course, particularly, the youngsters) and even persons who kept up 20-25 yrs. of experience, CANNOT do confidently. They cannot even mingle freely with higher officials except being interested in their ASSURED perks, allow. etc., particularly, if they are govt. employees.

But, only the heartening thing is that OR EVEN THE THING WHICH PINCHES is that all these above category of employees are paid higher salaries & facilities only by virtue of their so-called technical & professional qualifications irrespective of their less knowledge in official decorum WHICH I AM REGULARLY EXPERIENCING (AS A SILENT SPECTATOR) I, TOO BEING A GOVT. EMPLOYEE. Even they also really accept and admire the ability of the experienced people w/out much qln.

Degree Vs Work
by Loknath on Oct 31, 2006 11:24 AM  Permalink

As the adage goes... Lakshmi and Saraswati don't mix and its been true always. Financial success and education are mutually exclusive. Education lends knowledge, experience lends wisdom. To quote einstein again.."The most intelligent person on this earth is a slave of a defunct economist.. to modify it a bit. the most intelligent person on earth is a victim of a cruel (not so intelligent) master. Chanakya knew this well and hence he chose to engineer a kingdom but never became the ruler himself. Philosophically looking at it, a person of limited knowledge and good work experience is able to put what ever he has to good use and hence make his millions.. but a person with too many degrees spends his entire life analysing the options that were taught to him and ends up being only poorer. It took 30 years for Dhirubhai to create country's most enviable empire, and his wharton educated sons took less than 2 years to tear it apart. whatever wisdom they have is inherited and not cultivated the hard way.

perfect balance requried
by Ashish Raj on Oct 31, 2006 11:00 AM  Permalink

see from my point of view
Education makes u more informed and make ur approach more logical and systematic.
Practical Exp. teaches u how to face different challenges and behave in a matured way to deal with any kind of situation.

so in my view a perfact mix of both can do wonders.
and dont see everything in th light of those who are successful like Murthy and ambani.....see how many have failed due to absence of one of these factors.

degre or work experience?
by Elizabeth on Oct 31, 2006 10:35 AM  Permalink

Hi,

I am a proffessional in social care field since 12 years. I learned more from my work than my college. But of course my knowledge has helped me to understand the different context of what i am practically doing. I feel education plus work will help the students to have a better understanding and take the learnings forward.

Are Degrees more worth than work
by Arnavaz on Oct 31, 2006 10:30 AM  Permalink

I think just reading books and scoring marks, being a state ranker its all good on paper but basically you have to be street smart, a good communicator and experience then automatically you will achieve more success than the more educated people.

Experiance that matters
by peethambaran on Oct 31, 2006 10:03 AM  Permalink

Basically, it's the right combination of 'both' which works i.e. right amount of education and experiance. However, a person who has got the experiance with the right kind of attitude will be more useful than a PG or even a PHD holder.

Degrees or work experience?
by Sheeja on Oct 31, 2006 10:01 AM  Permalink

Of course Degrees are more worth than work experience. Although a person who has worked for many years but without degree may not get that kind of increment & promotion which a degree holder with a less experience will get. But above all these things perseverance, luck & little bit of smartness is required for the growth of any individual.

degree or experience
by Vikas R. Joshi on Oct 31, 2006 09:58 AM  Permalink

Knowledge no doubt is essential. But having knowledge is not enough. You have the knowledge, know for God's sake put that knowledge into practice!

Both knowledge and experience are important in their own right, but a little work experience before knowledge, especially a management degree, is better than a direct degree without work experience. THe reason being that having some work experience before hand enables a person to take out more from the course and particularly from a practical point of view. This also enables a person to be more innovative. Putting thoughtds / knowledge into action is very much important than just having the thought / knowledge and sitting on it. Work experience before a degree prepares the candidate to enrich him / her self optimally.
