go for MBA first
by Husain on Jul 21, 2006 06:09 PM  Permalink

If you are doing MBA from a top A grade B school like IIMs, NITIE, etc as a fresher then you will save your 2-3 years...coz a fresher after MBA from top B-school will get a profile that will offer an exponential growth path..
Why to achieve same thing after incurring 4 years when you can get it in two year!!!

Is work ex preferred for MBA?
by Manik Taneja on Jul 21, 2006 05:43 PM  Permalink

Hi everyone,
I was just going through some of the messages that have ben posted on this topic.I am an MBA(finance) from Symbiosis having passed out this year only and working in Mumbai now.I happened to do my PG immediately after passing out of engg. And our batch had a good mix of people with work experience and fresheres.I would say that having some amount of work experience would eb a plus but being a fresher isn't a complete disadvantage. Both the things have pluses and minuses. Being a fresher you tend to be much more interested in learning and pick up things quickly. If you are a fresher since everything is new to you you are much more interested in learning the ropes.I am saying this after seeing that some of the people who had work experience in our batch weren't flexible and would always stick to what they believed was right.

Regards,
Manik Taneja

mba-for money or for sharpening your skills
by Vivek Jha on Jul 21, 2006 05:22 PM  Permalink

the concept of doing MBA in india and the world is totally different. While this is common feeling in India that one does MBA coz it fetches a heavy salary. In most of the western countries the concept of doing MBA is sharpening the skills.

most one year programs are designed keepin in mind the latter thinking..

MBA is all about business and managing skills not about paying heavy.. thus..work ex does play a very important role..with a work ex one has an edge over those with non work ex..coz such experienced persons..understand the terms, the environment and industry better than others..

MBA should not be seen as a shortcut to heavy pockets but a gateway to better knowledge..coz today..knowledge is power and knowledge is money

How about this Scenario:

I am a BBA Graduate with Marketing/Finance as specializations. The jobs that i am offered right now are of Sales/Marketing.

I have seen people who are just Commerce/BBA graduates who take up Sales, reach up the area sales manager post in 3 years if they perform well.

I have also seen that the same post is offered to someone who is an MBA (from an average BSchool)with zero work ex.

What should one do in such a casE?

Prior work experience prefferred for MBA
by Nitant Raut on Jul 21, 2006 04:44 PM  Permalink

I have been working in Industry for last 15 Years. while working I have always noticed that A fresh MBA without having any work experience lacks in practical knowledge compared to that of a person having actual practical knowledge of the work processes.

But Off course an MBA degree holder with a practical work experience rules the industry.

A consulting perspective
by Madhyam on Jul 21, 2006 04:30 PM  Permalink

I have been a strategy consultant for the last seven years and am an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad. I went into IIMA sans any work experience, simply because I got in at first try. Over the years I have recruited a number of people at different levels, typically into strategy consulting or corporate planning roles.

For my kind of career, work experience after the undergrad degree is not the major consideration. No work experience can substitute for critical thinking, working around uncertainty and verbal / quantitative ability. Many a time I have dealt with candidates with impressive work experience who have fallen into the organizational trap, ie. cannot think outside the boundaries of their previous work. On the flip side, a certain minimum work experience gives candidates confidence in talking on management topics; they are able to visualise issues much better. The ideal candidate would have 2 years of pre-MBA work experience that is project-based and exposed to the broadest possible range of organizational roles. Do remember that pre-MBA work experience will not give you a leg up for a post MBA position in a consulting job; you still start at the bottom!

Work-Ex before MBA should be mandatory
by Adarsh on Jul 21, 2006 03:41 PM  Permalink

Doing an MBA with work-ex is analogous to stitching clothes without measurements...sad analogy but one must have experienced corporate or business environment before enrolling for an MBA program and extracting the most value from such programs.

Presently, we do come across majority of fresh MBAs who are smart but have a long learning curve in order to reach a stage of performing as per requirement and making basic decisions.

relevant work ex is better
by vijay on Jul 21, 2006 02:48 PM  Permalink

Hi,

Though work ex is better to have it shuld be relevant one. for ex having work ex in selling soaps may not be usefull if u develope interest in finance & want to specialise in invenstmant banking. or vice versa.
as most of studets fail to understand their interst earlier in theri career maybe due to our education systme wasting time in working in non relevant jobs may not be good enough.
