MBA
by JAYESH RAJENDRA MANKAD on Jul 19, 2006 01:18 PM  Permalink

Dear Shalini

After graduating you can definitely look for a job but all depends on your necessity and economic criteria. If u are financially sound then try for CAT and dream for a better B-school like IIM, XLRI by getting into it. Even Symbosis-Pune , Narsee Monji Mumbai are second alters.

Alternatively do part time MBA/correspondence MBA if it is available in yr city centres.

THE BEST CHOICE IS IIM -AHMEDABAD if job is not criteria.

Wish u good luck

Dear Shalini,

As u have said that u will be graduating in commerce this year, and u want to know whether to take up a job or to continue with studies? Well, for that, i would like to advise that fisrt focus on what you want to achieve and what you want to do, like if you want to go for an MBA degree u can take up a job first and get a practical exposure of the stream you would like to undertake in future.

Workd Exp. 1st.
by Rahul on Jul 19, 2006 01:13 PM  Permalink

Hi,

yes really good to have work experience before you go for MBA (full time). But before starting work be sure in what field you want to be in. i.e in finance, marketing, operations, HR etc. After choosing the field you can do work in the same stream for year & half after your graduation. No matters at what level. Hence you will be familiar with that subject. And yes give 6 months after work to search for a good college.

Does your work experience help MBA?
by Venkatesh R.D. on Jul 19, 2006 01:03 PM  Permalink

Dear Shalini,

You have asked a very good question which many others will never ask! Because they will never know what they are doing.

MBA is essentially a Master Digree where your Field experience will count. The examinations are of different pattern, not like your earlier accademics.
In your earlier examination you might have written answers to questions by selecting most of the lines from your text book (By-Heart sometime!!), which will be purely theoretical. But here you will be asked to solve practical problems. You will have to answer by framing your own sentences and views. You need to refer to various 'reference books' along with your usual text books. If you have already experience in the respective field it will be easy to understand the concepts and solve the problems very easily sometimes even without reading books! If you are keen on doing MBA My suggestion is, keep reading business news papers and magazines. These are very essentials for knowing whats' going on presently throughout the world. I have 15 years of industrial experience with BE Mech and Final MBA now.My advice join to a properly organized company, stay for 2 years, then join MBA. All the best.

work-ex or MBA
by Rahul Anand on Jul 19, 2006 01:01 PM  Permalink

hi

This choice entirely depends on you. But some of the points that can be considered are:

- MBA without work-ex is possible perhaps only in India so if you want to pursue MBA outside u must have work-ex

- work ex gives u an insight into the corporate world and its procedures and work enviro. It not only adds to your personality but also to your ability and knowledge. you develop an additional skill set apart from those acquired at the university.

- work-ex gives u a chance for being considered for lateral offers. whereas if u r a fresh grad u will probably be offered the job of a Mgmt Trainee

- preparing along with your job is tough whereas your best chance of cracking an exam like CAT is when u r a fresher.

- perhaps the most important aspect of work-ex is that it will help you focus your career and will give you a direction and a valid reason for your MBA whereas most of the time we join the MBA as a fresher coz of parental or peer pressure or coz of the fat pay checks.

i guess thats enuough .do the reality check on yourself and decide.

Best of Luck!!!!

Go for MBA
by Ghanshyam Singh on Jul 19, 2006 12:57 PM  Permalink

It will be of great advantage if you go directly for MBA and the employers can pick you directly from campus.

Degree will be more valuable
by Chandan Vichoray on Jul 19, 2006 12:45 PM  Permalink

Go for a degree first. You are in the position of maintaining the tempo for education. Once you taste the blood of money, it will not be easy to return to your education for want of time or even the tempo.

Good luck

Work Experience should come first
by Gaurav Sinha on Jul 19, 2006 12:41 PM  Permalink

Hi all,

I also faced same confusion thisd after after i completed my 1 year of work exp. in a leading multinational but with a small package in Pune. I planned to go for a correspondence course from Symbiosis ....now i think its better to go for some satellite program from XLRI , IIMs rather than a distance MBA from ICFAI, SIMS because they only give you a logo in your resume, no any credibility in market.

So i would advice everybody and also would like to pursue the same next year with 2 years of work exp. in IT........

Please suggest or give ur remarks if i am wrong..

Gaurav Sinha,
