poor english
by vaibhav on Sep 02, 2006 01:10 PM  Permalink

dear radishkumar!!
what i would suggest u is: when u go for an interview dont think of how u need to speak, but focus on what u need to speak. If you fear in an interview, you are not going to be selected anyway. So, why think of fear when you know that it will affect your interview. I would recommend you to not to think of english while giving your interview.

And you can only do this if you practice speaking in english. Join voice based bpo for an example.

Dear paturi,
you need to spend more time on writing/typing. Then you need to read what you have written and correct the mistakes. You need to read a lot of English newspapers and magazines.

Poonam, firstly, you don't take another culture - you adopt it. Secondly you don't HAVE to. You have choices. It always surprises me that in India we seem to be very underconfident about our culture and fear the fact that another culture could replace the existing one. Thirdly, speaking another language does not dilute your culture, it merely enhances you as a person. think about it and stop being so fearful.

English in Interview
by Uday Phutane on Sep 01, 2006 10:13 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Never take pressure of english for interview, dont try too much concerntration on the language, just think it as a stupid tool required by the interviewer to pass the interview, rather than you knowing the work for you are being employed for. The Japanese never needed to know english to sell Toyota in America or Hindi to sell sony products in India.

I am also agree with poonam. I been to canada for a month around and found that people are very different what we think are they. Like they are gentle in nature, they prefer complete cloths, they do not like smoking and drinking much, they like to explore their talents for the sake of their satisfaction.
In short, they work to live their life various indian people live their life to work.

And Important thing, they do not speak english continuosly, they just split sentences and speaks. In other words an indian is speaking very effluently than an canadian/foreiner.

But,still they are well ahead than us. just because they are not giving any importance in such matters.

Manoj, I don't think it's fair to say people will forget their first languages just because they learn English well. You probably haven't heard of people being bi-lingual. Whether we like it or not English is the preferred global language and there is a need to speak it - and speak it well. This does not mean putting on an accent, but getting your speech grammatically correct and pronounciation go a long way in sounding better.

The BPO industry has created a new breed of indians, who speak english in western slang. Never had been the need to speak good english greater than it is today. BPO's not only require you to speak good english but develop a foreign accent-unnatural.

Thereby creating a army of english speakers- who know nothing but to speak engish with a american accent. I think undue amount of importance is given to your accent by BPO's. This effect has rippled in other industries as well. The day is not far when all the people in india would speak only english and have no knowledge whatsoever, about their native tongues.

Poor English and job interviews
by R A Krishna on Aug 31, 2006 05:22 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Practice makes perfect. First think of your English as good. Any number of people including our President have a pronounced vernacular accent. If your accent is too perfect people think that you are working in a BPO! Learn first how to improve your grammar and also to start speaking even if slowly at first. If anyone laughs at you, never mind. You will have the last laugh as you get better! Take small steps and move to bigger ones. Go to http://www.englishclub.com/learn-english.htm. I browsed it and found it to be a good free resource on the net.

For good English
by sreetilak on Aug 31, 2006 04:52 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is important to learn good English. Indians should not be concentrating on learning the right accent, but on speaking correct English. I recommend a new book that is very useful. It is called "Indlish: The book for every english-speaking Indian" (author: Jyoti Sanyal).

Radish, Your assumption that you speak good english needs to be re-evaluated. From your post it's clear that you need to work a lot on your skills. Get someone who speaks good english to evaluate you. self- evaluation is often misleading
