caste factor
by ashok chavda on Apr 21, 2006 01:06 AM  Permalink

Most appointments in the private sector is done through informal cost saving methods. When Private sector says that they are appointing competent people they are conveniently lying. If they say that they are going for efficiency, it selects the best one out of a limited number of of people. not necessarily the best one.

The unemployment rate amongst the SC is twice the same among upper class. This is mostly because they have no access to information. If all jobs are properly advertised by private sector, it would be beneficial to both, the Private sector, as it would have a larger choice and to unemployed as they would be able to apply for the job. When a dalit cannot approach this network at all, the question of he being selected for the job he is fit for does not arise.
In other countries, the policy of reservation has been adopted against the discrimination on the bases of caste, race, color, ethnicity, nation and social origin. Racial discrimination is rampant in UK despite a law, Roman catholic are targeted in Ireland by protestants and in Pakistan there is Punjabi discrimination against the Baluchis and the Sindhis. USA calls it the Quota System to target and numerical bala

caste factor: show me the numbers
by ashok chavda on Apr 21, 2006 01:03 AM  Permalink

angrezi me likhne se caste badal jaati hai kya? rashmi,?
Why reservation policy:

In India, a large section of the society OBCs was historically denied right to property, education, business and civil rights because of the practice of untouchablility. In order to compensate for the historical denial and have safeguards against discrimination, we have the reservation policy.

The government must ensure that this eradication of discrimination does not limit itself to public or government sector, but this should reach private sector too, because, the scheduled castes are educationally backward and lack modern skills, after providing them with adequate skill building access and proper education, private sector, by law, should be co-operate and follow a general reservation policy the nation follows. Right now only 3 to 4 per cent of the positions in the private sector are appointed through open advertisements.

make a commission
by vinnie on Apr 20, 2006 11:54 PM  Permalink

It is very clear to me that reservations provided little help to the needy people.

Overall existing reservation system failed to address actual need of classes who needed help.

A comission should be gathered to find out results and recommend on further policies of reservation. Also their recommendations should be acceptable to everyone.

It should consist of intellectuals from multiple classes and should be give extensive data and systems to find out exact impact of policies. Also they should be provided with resources necessary to take it further.

Backward classes - a number game.
by T.P. Viswanathan on Apr 20, 2006 11:18 PM  Permalink

The author has brought out certain vital background material and present facts. Assuming not admitting the veracity and relevance of the age old statics, one must admit that the number or nomenclature of casts was a pure political game to catch votes. In many states (e.g. Tamil Nadu and Kerala) where brahmins were larger in number than the combined strength of SC/ST/OBC in 1930 almost well upto 1970, have turned minority in those states. Undisclosed and unexplainable persecution and supression of Brahmins are going on in those States simply because of the larger number of SC/ST/OBC in those states.
Politically driven reservation will only accentuate the disparity and confusion.

Dumb-Head politicians
by Vikram on Apr 20, 2006 10:11 PM  Permalink

Our politicians are scared of making any statements against reservations; Most of them care about the vote bank. If they are ensured that reducing reservation based on caste increases their vote-bank, we will soon see less of caste politics. till then we have to keep the issue well debated!

EBC vs OBC
by srinu on Apr 20, 2006 08:32 PM  Permalink

If u provide reservation for OBC candidates. what abt their parents if they are job holders. Still they require reservations...... shame on them

Reservations are required for weaker sections not for childrens of job holders.
What abt Economically backward people class (wat i call it as EBC) in upper castes (what govt feesls) ? dont they require any support from the govt?

Something more than reservations.
by Bagmar satish C. A. on Apr 20, 2006 07:43 PM  Permalink

Noted journalist M. J. Akbar has rightly elaborated how Muslim,Sikh and cristains have no caste system and how upper caste together means 40 % are out of reservation .This class and religions oppose.
But real issue is do we exploit opportunities fully? what reservations alone do if we have no mechanisam to spend public money properly? If we do not have will and courage to go for massive economic adventure like china?we have no HRD to Build and use infracture.Electricity shortage alone costs us 3 lac crores GDP.Our public spending is very low as fiscal discipline is key of our economics.
In agriculture due to subsidised foreign goods our agriculturists to compete have lost massive Rs. 136000 crores and there is massive fall in employment days per person in agriculture and there is shift to corporate farming.and now FDI in retail trade.1 employee of MNC shall do work of 95 retailors.
corruption drains 85 paisa of a rupee. That is why even small allocated funds too remain unspent.we just lack mechanisam to spend. In absence of infrastrecture, hrd 60 % of our minerals are exported unvalueadded. And Bush asks his enterprenuers to exploit Indian markets.we need to exploit opportuni
