Hi,

There aren't any Andhra Food joints in Pune - at least to my knowledge (believe me, I have scouted enough). The compensation, u will get some good Tamil food in Rastha peth. These are like typical mess types - one name Bhavani caterers is just opposite to the Ayyapa temple in Rasthapeth - u can try it. Being a Tamilian, I just love the food. Have been someone who lived in Andhra for a couple of years, still keep looking for some good andhra food...

Well Written!!!
by MADHU on Oct 11, 2005 03:46 PM  Permalink

Hey Abhishek,

I'll say something you've already heard by now -- It's a very well written piece -succint and succulent!

Congrats!!!

I also liked the way you clarified the diff. bet a Southerner and a Madrasi.

In my experience Andhra Bhavan was "the Find" of my Delhi visit when I was there for my Fulbright interview. I went there all the way from Hayes Road for the duration of my visit.

For the Andhraiite missing the touch of home, AB is the place not just for the meals but for the flavour of Andhra (and I don't mean just the culinary one).

I feel one must visit AB, if only for the service and hospitality which is sure to warm the cockles of many an Andhra Heart.

Why 'overwhelming?'
by Anand on Oct 11, 2005 08:06 AM  Permalink

Hello,
Too much of Telugu is overwhelming ? Why is it so. do you wish to hear Hindi everywhere and always. It is AP Bhawan and meant as a meeting place for Telugus.

Have you been to Bangalore of late ? It is thousands of miles away from Hindi areas. And you hear only Hindi in almost all IT areas. It is very intimidating and truly overwhelming.

As good as it gets!
by Youraverageguy on Sep 23, 2005 04:20 PM  Permalink

Abhishek,

Really well written piece. I am a great fan of Andhra Bhawan myself and have had many a wonderful meal there! What is most appalling is the way they manage to ensure that your plate is filled even before YOU realise it's empty! Nice to know that there are others who appreciate and dote on Andhra cuisine as much as us Andhrites!
For other foodies, check out Ya-shasvi, the Maharashtrian canteen near CP. Not as authentic in food and seamless in service as APB, but nonetheless, a decent experience.

Very True
by Mahesh V on Sep 21, 2005 04:44 PM  Permalink

It is very true that a person who visits AP bhawan for a meal will frequent it from then on. I being an andhraite was working in chandigarh for about 2 yrs and missed the andhra food there. Whenever i was in delhi, i made it a point to visit AP bhawan for the authentic andhra lunch without fail. Even if i were in delhi for a day, i still would make it there. As mentioned by Abhishek, one is really lucky if they can get a seat in 15-20 mins on a sunday. Whenever i went on a sunday, i had to wait for a minimum of half an hour and sometimes even close to an hour. Another thing i observed there was that apart from andhraites, u find a lot of tamilians, kannadigas and also local delhiites who are regular and not one timers.

It is a pity that mumbai being a bigger city than delhi has no place for authentic andhra food.

ANDHRA MEALS
by V.A.RAMARAJU on Sep 21, 2005 01:38 PM  Permalink

ABHISHEKH,S WRITEUP IS CUTE AND TASTY LIKE THE FOOD HE TALKS ABOUT.AP BHAVAN,S FOOD IS ALSO ABOUT THE HUMILITY ,GRACE AND DIGNITY OF TELUGUS AS WELL AS THEIR ABILITY TO PROVIDE A MENU AT AN AFFORDABLE RATE FOR AN AVERAGE INCOME EARNER.THE WHOLE THING IS ABOUT SCALE AND VOLUMES.HOW ONE WISHES ALL THE STATE BHAVANS SERVED THEIR TASTY,MOUTHWATERING DISHES FROM THEIR STATES TO THE PUBLIC AT AFFORDABLE PRICES LIKE THE TELUGUS DO.THAT WOULD STRENGTHEN THE NATIONAL UNITY IN A VERY TYPICAL INDIAN SPICY ROUTE.THAT REQUIRES REDUCTION OR SCRAPING OF CERTAIN TAXES BY DELHI GOVT.AND INITIATIVE BY ALL THE STATE GOVTS.IT IS VIRTUALLY FIVE STAR FOOD AT REASONABLE RATES FOR THE AAMADMI.THESE PEOPLE FRIENDLY MEASURES ARE ALWAYS BRING JOY&COMFORT TO PEOPLE.
