Greg Chappell's resignation
by Sudipto Ghosh on Apr 05, 2007 01:43 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

No doubt Greg Chappell's intentions were right. I don't think he joined as a coach to disrupt and disintegrate Indian cricket. He did come with the right intentions but unfortunately for him and for Indian cricket, could not make his or our dreams come true. At the end of the day whatever be the reason, he failed to deliver what HE had to. Therefore like every CEO or Chief Executive he rightly resigned.
That does not mean that Mr.Chappell is not a good cricketer or a good coach just like one bad season does not change the fact that Sachin is one of the greatest batsmen ever.
I think what the Indian cricket team needs IS someone like Gavaskar or Ravi Shastri or even Kapil Dev because 1.They are respected much more than players from abroad. 2.They know the Indian mind-set and needs which is a must if the mind set needs to be changed. 3.They have been through the same things that the current cricketers are going through.
I therefore think it would definitely be a good idea to have an Indian player as a coach someone who commands the respect of everyone including all the senior and junior cricketers someone who has lot of experience in international cricket and the names that come to mind are Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, Ravi Shastri etc.
Your comments please.

I have not heard Kapil, Sunny, or Shastri ever coached any side. They are big names, but that does not guarantee success as coach. I think the job must go to a practicing coach. People management must be one of the criteria.

I agree good man management skills are definitely required but one thing that Greg did not have as much was respect from the players. Thats why players like Kapil; Gavaskar etc may fare well.
The coach has a hand in selection but final selection lies in the hands of the Selection committee and the captain.

coach is one who understands players and makes use of thier skills, rather than impose new/unuachievable targets or self proclaimed forumlea, how to use attitude of players to get results, and gave players space to breath.
Coach is a mentor.Jimmy could be a choice.

I don't think Kapil and Gavasakar would make great coaches..People like this tend to push their fav into the team..U have already seen this with Gavasakar..All great players don't make great coaches.

Too much of politics here.He would not have survived another term.Having Indian coaches has disadvantages..They push for players in their states or players they support..So it is best to employ a person with good man management skills
