Very disappointing that he should leave. India definately needs a top quality international coach for the team to keep up with the rigours of international fitness. He met that requirement even though some may think he was not the best.
He must have realized, as I did, that once Tendulkar spoke against him, there was no chance - there was no way he would have been able to get along with the team after that.
Now that he is going, we are really stuck. I dont believe any of the candidates in India are suitable. None of the former cricketers with the exception of Gavaskar, Shastri and Venkat have travelled regularly overseas, seen first hand how the game is changing and interacted with international cricketers. Srikanth and Sidhu are idiots, Kapil Dev is not good enough and others are totally out of depth. Mohinder Amarnath may be the only decent possibility.
With all this controversy, and will Bob Woolmers death, we should be worried whether another foreigner will ever take up the job. Further, people like Steve Waugh are tougher and sterner than Chappell and will cope less with the ways of our cricketers. Dont expect we will find another candidate so easily.
And yes, I hope people like Tendulkar gracefully retire as well. Kumble was performing reasonably well, Chappell could not do much if senior batsmen with 10 years experience were failing but Tendulkar is a zero and needs to go!
