Lost relevance of athletics
by cva on Aug 05, 2008 05:17 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Back in the day when greek states had olympics, long distance running, high jump, javelin throws, discus throws, sprinting etc had military significance. for the young men who participated and did well, there was a real life relevance to those skills.

What is the significance of the above athletic events now?? we no longer throw javelins in wars and do not sprint from place to place to convey messages in the battlefield(phones etc)

The only Indians who care about medal tallies at olympics are the ones in USA who feel embarassed by tallies of USA etc. Indians in India are too busy earning livelihoods and enjoying cricket to care about olympics.
