Hard to understand...
by Pankaj Mohan on Apr 11, 2008 09:29 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

What could have Paes achieved had he been playing solo? May be he could have climbed up to the 60th spot...or 50th? The grand slams he won after grouping with Bhupathi are the only worth mentionable achievements of his career apart from a bronze at Olympics, which has little value in the real (commercial) tennis. In fact, both went on to excel in the doubles even after breaking up, which again was largely because of their earlier experience as a doubles pair. Both have to be thankful to each other for whatever they have gain in tennis. Paes reminds of sour grapes by the way he has spoken today.

What are you trying say dude? Earning an Olympic medal looks like joke to you or something? How many Indian sportsperson has won an Olympic medal in individual category? Answer is very few. You should have kept this in mind before saying that it has very little value.

You objection to my statement is based on the fact that very few Indians have won Olympic medals in the past. That is because we Indians lack in sports in general, and not since Olympic Bronze medals were any exceptional events. Besides in tennis, the real test comes from the commercial circuit where you have to face the top brass unlike in the Olympics, where only selected few from each country will make it out to the venue. I may or may not be right in my judgment about it, but the grand slams Paes and Bhupathi had won were the first truly major breakthrough for the Indian tennis IMHO.

PS - I remember jumping and shouting in joy for several minuted when I was first told about Paes' winning of the Olympic bronze back in those days...but then again, it is since we hardly win any Olympics medals, and not because that proved a tennis player's true caliber.

I'll just add, I didn't try to look down at Paes' Olympic efforts. I was only trying to point at the enormity of results Paes and Bhuapthi got together as a team for India.
