F1: Environment's biggest enemy!
by Super User on Oct 22, 2007 06:08 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Just when everybody is getting serious about depleting fossil fuels, and the effects of burning such vast amount of fuel on the environment, F1 plans on a double whammy!

Not only will they burn a lot of fuel but also spend a lot of electricity in hosting a floodlit race in Singapore! Imagine lighting up about 3 kms of road by floodlights!

I love F1 and am one of its biggest fans but there are times one needs to the draw the line between fun and responsibility. Sadly, FIA is not doing it!

How about Cricket? Is it gainers for everyone? The top gainers are the players & the cricket board.

Think about this...
Sometimes I wonder how many people are behind F1, is it a sport or science? Each year the top manufacturers invest millions to their R&D team to produce an innovative, yet better engine than the previous years. Not getting into details, each of the manufacturer wants the best gear box, best suspension, best tyres, best aerodynamics, best steering components, best clutch, best power trains, best fuel pump and what not? Now each of these components are manufactured by the best companies & invented by best teams not on a sweet time, but by Christmas so that they start the season by March. Now they hire a best driver & a team to support on the track. Millions invested by one company to produce 4 such cars for 2 main drivers & 2 test drives with a back up of another 4 cars.
There is no chance of accpeting money for losing, no gambling, no bribe, no forgeries, there's pure race not only on the track, but for the innovation & technology.
Each year a car performs well on the track is a test for few thousand people who have put their hard work & dedication for one man, one car, one team to perform on the track.
Let's talk about cricket team???

But then isnt that comment valid for any sports that is played under lights - for e.g. All day night matches in cricket, rugby, soccer games. So lets for consistency mention everygame

Yes, thats true but when F1 is already polluting the environment by burning fuels, they can atleast keep their pollution to one source i.e. cars not cars floodlights.

It is time every sport interrospect hard whether there are compelling reasons to hold a sport under floodlights or can it be held under normal lights just as efficiently.
