We just blow it
by shiva on May 07, 2008 06:16 AM   Permalink

Where there is will, there is a way! It is ever true. But as a nation, we fall short!

We are one of the worst in terms of energy security. The first blow out in oil prices occured early 1970s when Gulf countries refused to supply oil to western countries. The west woke up to reality. Now, oil is slated to go even to $200/barrel. The reason, the alternatives are far away. The demand is almost inelastic. One just have to have it. For staple fibres, maybe we can find some substitutes or increase the supply within months. But for oil, we just have to bear it! The non-opec countries have no spare capacity. Opec says, there is enough of it and the price is not determined by them but by manipulators, meaning they have washed off their hands!

In this scenario, we are ingnoramus when the oil burns. We can be in a rude awakening when we cannot get the supplies at any cost. Oil is already becoming political. For us anything is political. Just blame others and carry on and play politics at the misery of common man.

We canniot agree on any stretegy. What is the alternative to nuclear energy? After we exhaust hydro & wind, may be solar is the best bet. Germany is the leader & we have the baking sun. The solar panels are from abundant sand. The basic source of supply sun, is free. So far, the cost is at least twice that of oil. As nuclear plants will take at least ten years to put up, if we have a strategy, we can gain with a solar strategy. Time we woke up!
