Poll Chief in custody
by Suresh Bhave on Mar 27, 2008 08:36 PM   Permalink

It is clear that the punishment has been meted out for not responding to the privileges committe's queries. One does not know what was the issue regarding delimitation. One cannot understand why the poll chief did not appear before the privileges committee. This seems to be highhandedness on his part. As for immunity, there should be no immunity from due process of law for anyone. Proceedings are, theoretically at least, to arrive at the truth and why should any one have immunity from that? People at every level must be responsible, answerable. There are too many people expecting to be above the law and exploit others for their own pleasure. Celebrities, politicians, industrialists, businessmen, artists, just everyone wants to be free fromthe clutches of law. That is to be able to get away with murder, if necessary. Of coursse, this is a general statement of an extreme case, not applicable specifically to Mr. Nand Lal. We also have to appreciate that the verdict was accepted by the house unanymously.
