more than 65 percent of migrants to mumbai are from other parts of maharastra. The anit migrant movement is a load of nonsense. many maharastrains are aware of this yet support the shivsena and mns as they want an issue to remind themselves of being a force in mumbai.

As per Mr. Singh's(from TISS) findings , 37% (or 2 million) are Maharashtrians, 25% from UP/Bihar and rest from other parts of the country. This implies a whopping 73% of migrants into Mumbai are non-Maharshtrians! This finding seems to be a contradiction to the front page headline that Maharashtrians constitute 67% of migrants into Mumbai.

It should also be noted that the last census survey (as opposed to a sample survey) has been carried out in 2001 and a good 7 years have passed hence, with the population in Mumbai rising at a high rate. A direct impact of this, as any common man can vouch for in Mumbai, can be felt in the inadequacy of Mumbai's infrastructure to handle the increased population despite new projects being launched.

Further, in my opinion, it is imprudent to ignore or underestimate causes taken up by shrewd politicians on either side. Today's politics is based on vote-bank numbers which are based on ground realities and not purely academic surveys.

Lastly the results are based on a sample survey and not a census count and that too it is not a 'random sample' and very likely may not ha
Lastly the results are based on a sample survey and not a census count and that too it is not a 'random sample' and very likely may not have enough data vis-a-vis the huge population size to make a meaningful conclustion on the specific hypothesis of non-Maharashtrians migrating to Mumbai.

This is what the migrants from
UP/Bihar do...

stay in slums (built on encroached land)
start hawking/vending business without licenses, thus clogging the road
do not pay tax
xerox-copy a single taxi/auto permit and drive 9-10 autos/taxis on that single permit and clog traffic and create pollution
break the above rules, earn profits at the expense of rule-abiders, thus showing following rules is stupid and thus create a lawless state in other words, convert Maharashtra into Bihar.
Go one step further, bribe corrupt govt officals to get ration card, get name into voters Id.
take advantage of this and get a free flat
Get politically active (with increasing mirgation) and start flexing political muscle by calling Amar Singh, Lalu Prasad.
foist their appointed politicans in municipal and local assemblies
These politicans then regularize their illegal activities with the help of corrupt bureaucrats.

Mumbai and Maharashtra is turning into a Bihar.

They are migrating from within one part of Maharashtra to another. So what's the problem with you.Is every resident of Calcutta born in Calcutta and nobody migrates from the villages to the state capital.Be it Madras,Hyderabad or Bangalore, the bhumipootra of the state has every right to settle in the capital of his state.
