Field Marshal Manekshaw was the only General along with Lt gen JS Aurora who gave India decisive victory in 1971. The generals/marshals/admirals of today's generation(Year 2008) have shown no promise. .They are confined to thier HQ's and are only bothered about their perks and obtaining post retirement benefits from Govt. Field Marshal Manekshaw was a 'professional military soldier'not a carrerist military officer whose sole aim is only promotion and becoming slave to senior officer's. Field Marshal Manekshaw had the courage to stand up to political leaders and make his voice heard. Today lot many reports are emerging in media about corruption among General rank officers. The present Army chief is not taking corruption seriously.

Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat stood up against the political establishment and was sacked. Right or wrong.. he had the courage to defy.. The standards are NOT declining. We still have only 2-3 candidates getting selected amongst 75-80 in 1 batch for officers' selection. But the past few years have been very crucial..at the rate the pay commissions are paying defence people, the standards would no doubt dilute...if you pay peanuts, you will get monkeys!!
