Earthquakes are normal geological process due to magma trapped inside and tectonic movement of earthen plates or volcanic eruptions. It has noting to do with population. However shocks and after effect may be devastating on population nearby epicenter of the tremor. The best way to minimize the damage to life and property is to train citizens to react and evacuate properly in the event of tremor and building structural safety should be followed with proper city planning;. Like in Japan which is one of the most tremor prone area of the world, where damage to life and property is minimum comparatively. There is no absolute science to predict tremors but it has been found that some animals have premonitions for tremors like frogs came out of hibernation before tremors in south china last month.

Barring nature/divine power, nothing can stop nature's power. Great people, who possessed divine weapons such as Arjuna etc. 5000 years back, has to simply watching tsunami taking dwaraka away. Of course, this was the will of Sri Krishna, as long as he lived, he protected it, as soon as he left, the city also came to an end. But what is to be understood is that there is the will of the supreme power beyond everything and in the time cycle of nature, nature acts and nobody can stop it. When such great people could not do anything, what mortal humans will do.
