The cops got disillusioned because of the 24 hour attacks from the media. Yes the media has to take its share of the blame, and also for suggesting loose charecter of Aarushi first. It was not the police but the media wanted a titilating story and had first suggested relation between Aarushi and Hemraj.
The media people had also dared to disturb the evidence in front of the camera. It was strange the police could/did not take action on these people.
As I see it from the information available some one who was known to Hemraj had come calling on him with a liquor bottle and he was speaking loud so the guest was taken upstairs by Hemraj so as not to disturb the inmates. The guest had a big reason to be anoyed of the Hemraj. He finds a good moment or diverts his targets (Hemraj's) attention and hammers him, and quickly slits his throat. Neither sharp edged weapons not slitting the throats of animals is new to the Nepalis.
At this moment he hears some sound from Aarushi's room. Per haps she saw the act of throat slitting which could explain the fluid found in the postmortem. She jumps into bed and amids the sheets thinking perhaps the murderer did not notice her. But she too ends up in a similar fashion.
First it was the police ho were misled by the innocence/simplicity of Dr.Talwar later it was the Talwars who were misled by the police.

it amazes me to think the kind of police we have in our police force who dont know the ABCD of criminal investigation. i wonder how they got into the IPS in the first place!
the media has nothing to do with the cops' incompetencies, inefficiencies, negligence, idoicies, and stupidities. in this respect the media did a good job in telling the world the kind of police that we have - corrupt, callous, insensitive, and pet dogs of the powers that be...

The incompetence of the police is proven to be 101% in this case. But it was partly because of the media sitting on the neck of the police. Whee from does the media get a right to disturb the evidence. It was the media which suggested honour killing on the very first day.
