Security of the Nation
by Tim Mukuty on Jul 27, 2008 06:30 PM   Permalink

Just like the Americans are getting target practise in Iraq and Afghanistan, we Indians seem to be providing the terrorists with the same.
What a shame that the largest democracy is crazy enough not to have an instituionalised National Security Policy. That is when we have been facing the terrorist brunt in the NE states since independence and now in other parts of the country since the eighties. Possibly it is the congenital faults in the constitution of ours; Else how can we have a PM and the Home Minister who are not elected ? or the power of the govt is not with those who are in the govt; or the criminals have the right to get elected to the Parliament whereas these criminals are not eligible to join the security forces who are mandated to protect the Parliament? Anyway these things cannot be changed and we have to live with it.
Now with the grave situation facing the country, can we have a special session of Parliament where every aspect of our nation's security can be debated. Can the media take same interest, so that the general public at least is tuned to the discourse of most importance. This should be followed by a vote of confidence, so that all MPs are forcibly present in the house and get to know what nation's security means.
We Indians have to make the powers that be accountable else hapless Indians will remain a fodder for big game in this sub-continent.
