There will never be any consensus!
by VASUDEVAN V on Jul 22, 2008 12:33 PM   Permalink

Will there ever be any consensus on our foreign policies. Just look at what we have:

Communists: Anti USA, anti Israel, pro China and pro all Islamic countries.

BJP: Was pro USA, but after denial of Visa to Modi by USA,their views are bound to be fudged. As for their relationship with Arab and other Islamic countries, will entirely depend on their attitude to Muslims in India. And, of course, in turn how Muslims treat BJP will also determine their attitude. All in all, it is difficult to see them having a clear cut foreign policy.

Congress: Most confused of the lot. They have to appease the minorities, ignore the majority community, appear to be pro-USA, pro-Europe, pro-China, pro-Islamic countries (but pro-Iran will be frowned upon by Europe and USA)and so on and so forth. Where does it leave Russia in the bargain. Just ask Pranab Mukherjee who got a royal snub when he last visited Russia.

All other regional parties: In the direction where the wind blows. In other words, they do not have any policy except to support or oppose the Government in power depending on their constituencies.

All in all, that the result of the nuclear deal in the Parliament will perhaps evolve a consensus among our politicians is only a chimera. They will be as confused as ever.
